Scaler interview – Oliver Asha

Over the course of our latest Lawtech Scaler programme, we will be following one entrepreneur’s journey as they look to learn some key skills to help successfully scale their startup.?

Meet Oliver Asha - TEP . Founder of Capacity Legal, solicitor, and a Lawtech Builder alumni! Find out a little bit more about what Oliver hopes to achieve through Scaler, and why he decided to take part.?

How did you get into the lawtech space?

I was qualified as a solicitor in 2006. Back then, things were pretty stuffy and traditional. There were a few computers about but they seemed to be used more as paperweights than computers! At the same time, legal services were getting harder and harder to access. So we started up a company to make these services more accessible by using tech to reduce the cost and speed up the process.

I started my most recent startup, Capacity Vault, last summer. We are currently pre-seed. I joined Barclays Eagle Labs then. Through that, I was introduced to LawtechUK , CodeBase etc., and their funded programmes aimed at lawtech startups.

What are your goals for the Scaler programme? Why are you taking part?

A few things! Community, peer support, mentoring – and some real practical advice around ramping up and scaling a business, how to fundraise, how to grow our team etc. Plus, hopefully some help with how to avoid common pitfalls or mistakes people encounter during the startup phase.

I also want to get to the bottom of presenting the pitch deck in the best possible way!

And how have you found the very beginning of the process?

We’ve had two sessions so far which have been good. I’ve actually come fresh from being a part of the Lawtech Builder programme, and there are a few familiar faces who have done the same. It is nice to see some friendly faces and have the chance to chat in the breakout rooms. The content has been useful so far, and the speakers have brought in practical experience about what is going on in the sector today.
