Scale up chemical processes with confidence in Bean Town
I definitely hated chemistry as a kid. I remember accidentally setting my lab book on fire once back at Rose-Hulman. I slunk back to the ME department in shame. But, I can certainly appreciate the minds that bring us all these great medicines and chemicals.
In pharma and bio process engineering, teams spend a lot of time getting a process working in the lab on a small scale. There's precise mixing of ingredients, dwell times, thermal control, reactions, separation/filtration, and more to get right.
Once that's done, you just have the trivial task of scaling the process up to production levels. Going from a beaker to a tank I could swim in shouldn't be so hard, right? Just scale everything by 20x. Sorry, it doesn't work that way. Throwing out bad batches at this scale through trial and error on the floor can cost mega bucks.
I often see Engineers with more of a Chemical Engineering background tasked with this responsibility. They can be a little less familiar with simulation tools like FEA and CFD than the Mechanical Engineers for whom these are household terms.
If that describes you (and you can get to Boston on April 11, 2017) join us for a complimentary workshop to learn how it's done. More details and registration here.
