Scalability for the Wearables – Far but Not Far Enough!

‘Wearables’ is the new grapevine for the IT & Media enterprises for more than a year now. It is mainly around the skepticism in terms of ROI and the market potential of the rising technology. The success stories seem distant with under performing smart watches, wristbands, fitness bands and eyewear gadgets. But it sure isn't vulnerable.

Talking about the major barriers to scalability of current wearable devices – it is the geeky design, premium costs and privacy & data inaccuracies – not all want a geeky pair of glasses.

As Mike Parker – CEO of Nike quoted to Bloomberg when asked about fashion & wearable devices, "I think the form it takes is what’s critical. You can go from very geeky kind of wearables today -- we’ve seen, all seen some of those -- to, I think, what you’ll see in the future are things that are more stealth, more integrated, more stylish and more functional, yes.” Maybe that was one of the reasons Apple CEO – Tim Cook decided to join hands with Nike.

Unlike the roadblocks (at present) for the wearable tech market, the drivers are much stronger. The exponentially increasing phenomenon of ‘Internet of Things’ (IoT) – is one of the biggest drivers. Market Analysts are predicting a similar effect of Tablets to the Laptops – caused by the wearable devices on the tablets (if not smartphone too). And the biggest bet is on the crop of wearable devices worn on the wrist & eyewear. Considering only these two factors – the wearable devices and the IoT – the methods by which the devices communicate today – can be transformed.
