The SBTi at COP28

Representatives of the SBTi, including CEO, Luiz Fernando do Amaral , Head of Outreach and Engagement, Tracy Wyman and LATAM Regional Lead, Lígia Ramos , have joined governments, businesses, academia and civil society at #COP28. So far, they have participated in various events and discussions to advance the case for businesses to set science-based targets.?

Additionally, to spur stronger action at COP28 and beyond, the SBTi has launched a new call to action: “Supply Change: Take Action On Supply Chains Today”. The call is designed to encourage companies to engage their supply chains to set science-based targets.?By sparking a snowball effect of action, companies can make considerable progress towards addressing their scope 3 emissions. 500 Companies Set Net-Zero SBTi Targets

Two years after the launch of the Corporate Net-Zero Standard, 500 companies have had their net-zero targets validated by the SBTi. Another 2,000 businesses are committed to setting their own net-zero targets within 24 months. Unlocking insights: New research paper on MRV in science-based targets

The SBTi and EY have published a new research paper that analyzes the current landscape of measurement, reporting and verification (MRV) of climate targets. In our latest blog, Emily Castro Prieto , MRV Manager, and Emma Borjigin-Wang , Corporate Decarbonization Research Manager?at the SBTi summarize three key topics:?

  1. Standardized threshold for significant changes
  2. Leading and lagging metrics
  3. Data quality and assurance

They outline how the findings will inform and support the SBTi’s upcoming work for reporting and progress assessment of science-based targets.


Upcoming Events and Opportunities

The SBTi Welcomes Applicants to Pilot the Buildings Guidance and Tool

The SBTi published a draft of its Buildings Guidance and Target-Setting Tool in May 2023 for public consultation. Acknowledging the comments received, the initiative has revised the guidance and tool in line with the feedback obtained. Now, the SBTi is calling for companies and financial institutions in the buildings value chain to pilot the guidance and tool. Anyone interested in participating in the pilot phase must complete this interest form by Sunday,?December 10 2023.

The SBTi Opens Call for Financial Institutions to Pilot its Draft Near-Term Criteria V2?

The SBTi published a consultation draft of its Near-Term Criteria and Recommendations for Financial Institutions in June 2023 for public feedback. In response to the feedback received, the initiative has updated the criteria and opened a call for financial institutions to pilot a draft version of the resource. FIs that wish to participate are invited to read the Pilot Test version of the criteria and Terms of Reference and submit their interest by Friday, December 15 2023.

Call for Experts to inform SBTi’s Oil and Gas Standard development

In order to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement, the oil and gas sector needs to radically transform. That’s why the SBTi is working to develop an Oil and Gas Standard —to enable companies in this sector to rapidly reduce emissions in line with limiting global warming to 1.5°C. As part of the initiative’s standard development process, the SBTi has released a call for experts to inform the SBTi’s Oil and Gas Standard development. The application for the Expert Advisory Group (EAG) will be open until Friday December 15, 2023.
