At COP28, the SBTi marked more than 4,000 businesses with validated science-based targets. This figure has doubled annually: from 2,000 last year and 1,000 the year before. To match the growing demand for credible corporate climate action, the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has released a set of new and improved resources to further increase efficiency and transparency. Target Validation Manager, Phoebe Holmes , outlines three key resources in our latest blog:?

The SBTi Forest, Land and Agriculture Guidance updates: What has changed?

The SBTi has made some minor updates to the Forest, Land and Agriculture (FLAG) Target-Setting Guidance to increase accessibility and facilitate understanding of the FLAG target-setting process. Tereza Bicalho , SBTi’s Agriculture, Forestry, and Other Land Use (AFOLU) Lead, and Lucine Courthaudon , SBTi’s AFOLU Project Officer, provide some detail on these updates .

Aligning Corporate Targets for Forests, Climate, and Nature

On January 25, 2024 at 11AM ET (5PM CET), GreenBiz will host a webcast to explore how companies that produce, trade, or source agricultural or forestry commodities anywhere in the world can effectively address supply chain risks. Martha Stevenson, Senior Director, Forests Research & Strategy, WWF-US, will be speaking about how businesses can?leverage resources like the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, SBTi FLAG Guidance and SBTN Land Targets.

Oil and Gas Sector Standard Development: SBTi Request for Proposals

Fossil fuel combustion accounts for the vast majority of global GHG emissions. That’s why the SBTi is developing a standard which will enable companies in the oil and gas industry to set science-based targets aligned with the latest climate science. To gather additional support, the SBTi has released four Requests for Proposals (RfPs) for consultancies to help develop key project deliverables. The RfPs closes January 19.

Weird that this newsletter doesn't cover the "Call for independent review – SBTi Target setting methods" RFP. https://sciencebasedtargets.org/resources/files/RFP-Methods-Review-scope-1.pdf Perhaps this is consistent with its terms: "The results of the study performed under this engagement will not be made public, but will be wholly owned by SBTi." So it makes sense that SBTi would keep this relatively hushed, lest it draws attention to the conflict between the scientific value of transparency being subverted by this intransparent process (recreating the exact same dynamic as the previous 2017-18 method review -- which has never been "made public" but remains "wholly owned by SBTi"...)
