SBOC POSTPONEMENT - CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19) UPDATE

SBOC POSTPONEMENT - CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19) UPDATE

ATTENTION: SBOC CHAPTER PRESIDENTS, VOLUNTEERS, PARTICIPANTS & FAMILIES

As the coronavirus (COVID-19) situation in Canada continues to evolve, we want to ensure all participants, parents and Spelling Bee of Canada (SBOC) family members are informed and taking all necessary measures to prevent exposure of COVID-19 and minimize risks leading up to and at the Regional and National Competitions.

In light of recent developments in regards to the severity of the global outbreak (now a global pandemic), the increasing number of cases in Canada, and the current recommendations from Health Canada guidelines discouraging large events and mass gatherings, the SBOC Board of Directors has decided out of an abundance of caution to postpone the 2019-2020 Spelling Bee season until further notice. This applies to all coaching, training, Regional Competitions set to take place across Canada, and the National Championships that were set to take place in Toronto, ON.

While we understand that this decision may be met with disappointment, the safety of our entire SBOC family must take precedence. This decision has been taken alongside our partner, épelle-Moi Canada, and while informing all our relevant stakeholders who agree with this necessary decision. In the coming weeks, as the situation continues to develop, we shall provide updates regarding our postponement timeline for Regional Bees and the National Championship.

We shall continue to take our recommendations from Health Canada. A second update on the postponement timeline will be shared by April 30th, 2020 upon review of the current circumstances and guidelines. The Spelling of Canada Board of Directors thanks you for your patience and understanding at this difficult time.

Yours Truly,

Board of Directors, Spelling Bee of Canada (SBOC)
