Sayonara Japan

Sayonara Japan

Dr. Gold, here! As many Gold Enterprises clients have heard, we paused our work for a bit. My family was able to take an amazing tour through Osaka and Tokyo, Japan. A group of about 30 American teachers, students, and parents were humbled by the mix of longstanding history and cutting-edge technology. In fact, where else can you visit shrines that are hundreds of years old on the same day as taking an electric bullet train past Mt. Fuji?! Although we should never expect to take in the fullness of an entire culture in a matter of days, I've attempted to drop some "a-ha" moments in this week's newsletter, now that jet lag as abated. Even if another place is on your bucket list, read on for cross-cultural travel thinking and resources!

5 Thoughts from SPG

1. It's a shame that so many adult Americans don't make language-learning a priority for ourselves and young people. Non-English speaking cultures owe nothing to those of us who speak only one language.

2. Accents are relative. Everyone has them, including YOU.

3. Cultural humility sounds like a cliche, but is a requirement to educational travel.

4. Some people choose not to have passports for very legitimate reasons. Some people choose to secure passports for very legitimate reasons.

5. We cannot divorce ourselves of capitalism in tourism, but we can be cognizant of leaving only what's beneficial.

Four Questions from SPG

1. Why do travelers expect to see their own lived experiences elsewhere? Your norm is not someone else's; their norm is not your own.

2. While appreciating someone else's culture, how might we leave it as we found it?

3. How might we check our passport privileges?

4. What happens when we "know better" about someone's country? How can we learn from this historical mistake?

Three Quotes

1. “Can we just skip to the part of my life where I travel the world?” – Unknown

2. “Traveling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.” – Ibn Battuta

3. “Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry, but by demonstrating that all peoples cry, laugh, eat, worry, and die, it can introduce the idea that if we try and understand each other, we may even become friends.” – Maya Angelou

Two Books

1. We are Experiencing a Slight Delay by Gary Janetti

2. Fodor's Essential Japan (Full-color Travel Guide)
