Saying thank you

Gratitude is great. I think we're all agreed on that.

Many benefits of genuinely cultivating a feeling of gratitude are relevant and useful at this time of year, including:

  • An immune system boost
  • Improved relationships
  • Increased optimism
  • Relishing (i.e. properly noticing and fully experiencing) good experiences
  • Greater resilience when dealing with adversity

Christmas is also a time when we are blithely wishing people "merry", "happy", "well", "joy", etc., whilst remaining unaware of how they might really be feeling inside. Perhaps, then, it is good to celebrate the season by demonstrating your gratitude for the people around you more directly. I have been wondering how to do this better lately.

Sometimes, all that is needed is an encouraging comment, a sensitive question, or a simple hug (depending on the context). Sometimes, a bit more effort is required: a thoughtful (but unexpected) gift on a significant day for them; an offer to look after their children whilst they take some much-needed time for themselves; a letter containing responses to all the times they've helped you out and how much difference it made to you.

There are many, many people I feel grateful for. This Christmas, the ones closest to me will be receiving something simple, but something that is surprisingly hard to give, most of the year: my full attention. I have a sneaking suspicion this will have a good effect on me, and hopefully on the recipients. It could even prove addictive.

This Christmas, what will you be giving those around you, to show them you are grateful to have them in your life?

I feel deeply grateful to have you in my life too Rebecca Blunden :) Your courage, sincere focus and hunger to keep showing up as your fullest self is such an inspiration!!!
