Saying Goodbye to the Happy Pricing Podcast (for now) - What We Learned Along the Way

After 50 episodes spanning over 3 years, Ben Johnson and I have decided to put our Happy Pricing podcast into hibernation. On the last episode of the podcast (for now) we reflected on how it began, what we enjoyed about the journey, and the deeper lessons it revealed.

Here’s a summary of what we discussed:

Genesis

Back in 2020 during a call on our Vision 20/20 group coaching programme, Ben was inspired by a comment about getting ideas out of your head to make space for new things. As someone with deep knowledge running companies, he saw an opportunity to share what was in his head around pricing work - an area many entrepreneurs struggle with. This planted the seed for teaching others how to price better in an accessible way. Rather than starting to design a course, I thought it would be simpler to just launch a podcast. I would ask Ben questions about pricing and he’d answer. Simples.

Joys of Exploring a Topic In-Depth

Over time we ran out of pricing things to talk about and so started to explore deeper topics that were still related but not so tactical. The free-flowing, curiosity-driven nature of our chats fed my soul. I appreciated having a focus but not being overly constrained by it. Ben enjoyed exploring a meaty business topic whilst revealing the influences below the surface: our inner relationship with money, drives and fears shaping how we show up in the world.

The Importance of Consistency

On a practical level, I discovered the amplifying effect of revisiting a topic consistently over time. I find that, in this way, I’m able to internalise ideas more easily and build my knowledge incrementally. I call this, “learning out loud”. The podcast was my learning journey, which gave me the confidence to launch the Happy Pricing course with Ben.

Revealing the Power of Inner Stories

One of the most important insights we uncovered in recording the podcast and running the course is how tactical pricing advice relates to our underlying “money stories” and worldviews. Learning new tools and strategies only create true change when we tackle our self-limiting stories that underpin them. Ben believes that we need revolutionary leadership during these times, and that societal stories can only be shifted when businesses become braver and more conscious.

Spaces for Birthing the New

So, whilst we put the Happy Pricing podcast to bed for now, we’ve recognised the stirrings of new ideas.. The depth these conversations fostered has inspired us to think of bolder creative contributions we could make to the world. We’ve discovered that when we “hospice” old ways with grace, it makes room for working from a place of “what if” instead of “what is” - where we can dream beyond current constraints and step into being the leaders we wish existed.

In summary, The Happy Pricing Podcast has been - for us - a learning journey at different levels. We didn’t just learn (and teach) more about pricing. We’ve learned more about ourselves and what we’d love to create.

If you’d like to follow our journey then do, please, subscribe to the podcast (it’s over 50 episodes) on Apple or Spotify, or visit the Happy Pricing website.

may you find a cozy cave and rest well, you mighty bear of an effort, happy pricing!
