Say What You Mean, and Mean What You Say, but Don’t Say it Mean!
Adrienne Streeter
President at Streeter Printing, Inc. and Owner, streeter Printing
I encountered this saying quite a while ago and it still resonates with me today.?The message takes many forms once I dissect it.?First of all, it helps to clarify my message –?(say what you mean) what do I REALLY want to communicate in an orderly and objective manner??The second part of the message (mean what you say) refers to boundaries . . . truly define what they are and will they be honored by me and others??The last part (don’t say it mean) teaches the importance of tone and body language, being kind in my delivery.?Will those behaviors be an asset or a detriment to the message I need to communicate??
Another saying that comes to mind is “Good communication is also in the hands of the receiver.”?Does the person you are speaking with receive your message the way you intended??Can you communicate in such a manner that the receiver does not get defensive??All things to consider based on the art of communication.
I don’t always have these techniques mastered, but they are in my “tool box” to refer to when needed!
