Say it quicker with Smart Compose!
The talk of the town is Gmail has recently added another gem to its already bejeweled crown. In a recent Google I/O event in California, the tech giant has announced a brand new feature for Gmail.
Gmail has unveiled its latest feature known as ‘Smart Compose’ that is essentially an auto complete tool for sentences. As a frequent user of Gmail for as long as I can recall, I can say with complete candor that any product or feature introduced by Gmail, or Google to speak in a broader sense, is bound to be one that is not only useful but also has very little room for failure in terms of user requirements.
Google’s history and its long standing relationships with billions of people all over the world is evidence that it has only added utility and ease to individuals and businesses in the form of their products and services. In the recent past Gmail has introduced features like Gmailify, Undo Send and turning key information in emails — such as addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses — into clickable links which have all proved to be beneficial to the masses.
Google has used a smart artificial intelligence system for this functionality that predicts the completion of the sentences most commonly used in formal communication to speed up digital correspondence. Smart compose also ensures less grammatical and language errors in your emails.
Smart Compose is a huge step forward in cutting back on repetitive writing that in turn saves valuable time.
Smart Compose runs in the background and automatically comes into play the moment you start composing your emails like you usually do and proposes suggestions as you type. If you come across a suggestion that you like, all you have to do is press tab to add it as a complete sentence.
‘From your greeting to your closing, and common phrases in between, Smart Compose suggests complete sentences in your emails so that you can draft them with ease,” said Google.
According to Google, Smart Compose can even sense provisional scenarios and suggest relevant salutations and greetings according to the sentence’s nature. For example, if you type “The forecast shows rain”, it may suggest “Keep an umbrella handy!” The company actually stated:
“It can even suggest relevant contextual phrases. For example, if it’s Friday it may suggest ‘Have a great weekend!’ as a closing phrase”
Google says Smart Compose will be made available for individual Gmail users in a few weeks while the G Suite users might have to wait a couple of months to be able to utilize the feature.
In all honesty, Smart Compose has been long overdue. With lightning fast communication getting more agile by the second, a feature such has this should have been rolled out a long time ago, considering auto complete has been around since forever! But considering the fact that no one else had yet stepped up and claimed this conquest, it must have been quite a difficult feat to achieve as artificial intelligence systems need immaculate logic and execution to ensure seamless performance and companies tend not to take risky nuisances like this head on.
It only seems fair that Google is the one that has introduced something as complex to achieve as this. We can all say with years of consumer trust backing it up, Gmail’s Smart Compose will be worth the delay.
To try the new the new feature, make sure you have the ‘Try the new Gmail’ component enabled in the settings section. Do not forget to access the General tab in the settings menu, scroll down and enable “experimental access”. In case it is not for you and you want to go back to the original, you can always uncheck the box and switch to the previous settings.
