If you're like most marketers we talk to, then there's a good chance you're a little fixated on managing your brands' Instagram grids. No shade here - we do it too! It's the first thing someone sees when they visit your profile, and it can make a major impression, good or bad.
A well-curated Instagram grid can make a profile look clean and professional, drawing people in and making them more likely to look at your posts. A messy grid, on the other hand, can look haphazard and unprofessional.
Why are we talking about this? Because Instagram is about to carpet bomb all of that hard work.
Instagram grids will soon start displaying rectangles for each of your posts rather than squares, which means all of your square visuals are about to get cropped. Have a series of posts that formed an image together in your grid? Not for long, you don't.
Instagram is already testing this out, with some users' grids resembling the Reel grid. Instagram Chief Adam Mosseri confirms that this change is motivated by Reels, which make up the majority of content on the platform today.
This might seem like a minor change to the average person, but to marketers, it means we have to completely rethink our approach to Instagram design. Expect more portrait aspect ratios and fewer squares as this starts to roll out.
