The Process Communication Model?? (PCM) is a revolutionary communication tool gaining traction in business to improve communication and foster collaboration.?It's an invaluable tool for organizations that want to foster a clear and effective communication culture.?In this article, we'll be looking at the benefits of PCM and how it can help your organization take its communication to the next level.?We'll also compare PCM to the popular DiSC tool to help you determine which tool best suits your organization's needs.
Why choose PCM over DiSC
PCM and DiSC are tools designed to help individuals and organizations develop better communication skills. However, while both tools have their merits, they have some key differences.
DiSC is a personality profiling tool that helps individuals understand their own personality type and the personalities of those around them. It helps a person better understand themselves, their strengths and weaknesses using four areas Dominance, Influence, Conscientiousness and Steadiness. DiSC is an excellent tool for better understanding interpersonal relationships, but it does not provide any guidance on how to communicate effectively with others.
On the other hand, PCM is a communication model that provides individuals and organizations with a framework for understanding communication and?how to communicate?effectively with others. It focuses on observing the communication styles of others and how to adapt to communicate with them effectively.
Second, PCM also offers a more comprehensive system of communication. It considers various factors, such as perspectives, needs, emotions, body language and life events allowing for a deeper level of understanding in connecting. PCM can also help individuals better respond to difficult conversations by understanding the conflict's underlying causes.
Third, PCM is also more adaptable than DiSC. It is used in various contexts, from one-on-one conversations to large group meetings. It can also be tailored to the specific needs of any organization or individual. This makes it a valuable tool for any organization or individual looking to improve communication.
Welcome to the Process Communication Model
The Process Communication Model (PCM) is a revolutionary communication model developed by psychologist Dr. Taibi Kahler. It is based on the idea that people communicate differently and that understanding these differences is vital to effective communication.
The PCM is an extensive yet straightforward model to observe and understand the communication style of each person involved in a conversation. It supports individuals and organizations by identifying how someone will react in a relaxed environment and under stress. It also can be used to develop effective communication strategies for any situation or medium, such as conversations, team building, emails, text messaging, presentations and hiring practices.
Also, Taibi Kahler, during his research, recognized how stress impacts the way a person communicates. This led him to define an underlying psychological need to support each distress pattern. When implemented, a person or organization can reduce conflict and increase motivation and engagement in the team.
What is the PCM?
The Process Communication Model (PCM) is a comprehensive tool to make a daily difference in building a relationship based on trust and rapport. PCM has two philosophies as its bases for communication:
First, how we say something is as important, if not more important, than what we say. Take a moment and reflect on a talented speaker you have seen. What was it that made their speech connect and so impactful? Now, imagine the exact same words said by someone else who lacks confidence and finesse in their ability to speak. Can you see how we communicate is key?
Second, we all develop skills varying degrees of the six personality types or perceptions over our lifetime. This concept is essential because it allows us to adapt our communication skills to connect with others. For example, if we had only one personality type, we would need help communicating with 70-95% of the population. Well, that would not work well.
Taibi Kahler, in his research, identified these six personality types with their perceptions:
Harmonizer?- caring, appreciative using language based on emotions and feelings. Often hear a phrase like "I feel..."
Thinker?- order and responsibility using logic-based language. They like to share information in data, with facts.
Rebel?- fun and spontaneity using language based on how they feel in the moment. They like slang and words like "That's so cool..."
Imaginer?- reflective and imaginative using language based on picturing things in their mind. They will tend to say, "I imagined..."
Persister?- values and beliefs using opinion-based language on a judgement or conviction. They will tend to say, "In my opinion..."
Promoter?- action, using charming, persuasive language. You will often hear direct communication, "Bottom link..."
Benefits of PCM for Organizations
The Process Communication Model (PCM) offers many benefits to organizations. It also helps organizations identify communication issues and develop strategies to address them. These strategies include hiring the right people for your team, embracing honesty and open communication while minimizing conflict, fostering a creative and collaborative environment, determining paths for growth by understanding motivation and how to show appreciation to increase engagement while lowering turnover.??
To quote Warren Buffet,?"one easy way to become worth 50 percent more than you are now - at least - is to hone your communication skills - both written and verbal."
What could your organization accomplish if each person was worth 50 percent more by learning how to communicate better? So let's dive a little deeper.

PCM and Hiring the right team
Many companies these days need help to hire and retain the right team. Often the interview goes well, negative behaviours, conflicts start, or a lack of engagement occurs. The Process Communication Model can provide two solutions to support you during the hiring phase.
Firstly, as an HR professional, you can request a completed PCM profile for the potential new hire. This profile allows you to evaluate where communication issues may arise amongst the team and what unconscious distress patterns may align.
?
Also, when training in PCM, you can detect communication patterns during the interview and ask better questions. Often people show signs of slight distress during an interview helping you determine any negative behaviours and motivation strategies.
For over 20 years, NASA, under the guidance of Dr. Terry McGuire, used PCM in selecting astronauts for space missions to ensure they put a team of people who could work well together and were conscious of how to manage their stress during difficult situations.
PCM and Embracing open communication.
One of the vital tools to build rapport, trust and honesty in your organization is to embrace open communication. The Process Communication Model(PCM) helps teams and individuals learn how to communicate with each others using the effective I'm OK / You're OK model. This process teaches people to release judgment of each person because of how they speak and perceive the world.??
When each person becomes aware of their own personality and communication style, while managing their psychological need, they interact more positively and openly. They can also interpret and observe how another communicates to allow space for better listening and engaging with others. Open communication allows each party to feel respected and heard in all conversations.
PCM and Fostering a Creative and Collaborative Environment
Fostering a creative and collaborative environment in today's business environment is critical. The Process Communication Model is an effective tool to help teams come together, share ideas, and encourage candour while avoiding negative conflict.
Often in a meeting, it is possible to hear a few people openly expressing their ideas and opinions while others quietly hold back their thoughts and feelings. Using PCM, the facilitator will confidently know how to engage each person to share feedback by ensuring a creative and collaborative environment. When implemented correctly, you can get better ideas and solutions to problems and opportunities to move your company forward.
The PCM process helps the facilitator know who needs time to reflect to show solutions vs who needs the meeting to be fun and engaging or someone else who needs it to be on time and punctually. By understanding each individual's best environment and needs, the facilitator will allow them to show up as the best they can be. Treating people individually allows for tremendous respect and creative conflict, not negative.
PCM and Opportunities for Growth
According to LinkedIn's 2020 Workplace Learning Report , 63% of employees said they would stay at their current jobs for at least five years if their employer provided them with more opportunities for learning and growth. So if you want to retain your top talent, including growth opportunities is vital.
The Process Communication Model (PCM) helps an organization with growth opportunities by providing action plans to support an individual's psychological needs. Focusing on developing actions and growth plans that support your psychological need can reduce your life's anxiety, frustration and stress. This reduction allows you to show up, connect and develop positively. PCM also helps you identify self-sabotaging language patterns that inhibit growth. When you become aware of them, you can manage and monitor them while you develop the needed skills.
PCM and Appreciations
Management often needs help to provide practical appreciation and feedback to an individual. Through observing and paying attention, you can determine how to give feedback and appreciation that inspires and engages a team member.
When a manager gives feedback, not in line with an individual's communication style and psychological needs, it can backfire, even if the intention is positive. By learning to decode a person's communication style using the Process Communication Model (PCM), a manager or supervisor can identify how to motivate a team member. This motivation typically leaves the team member feeling respected and valued. When a team member feels respected and valued, you will increase engagement and empowerment in the corporate culture.
Imagine leading an organization where every member of your team feels empowered. A team where communication flows quickly and effortlessly. A team where conflict leads to creativity and increases profits. This is all possible with the implementation of the Process Communication Model.??
PCM is the perfect tool if your organization wants to improve communication and foster collaboration. So say goodbye to DiSC and say hello to PCM! Get started with PCM today and take your organization's communication to the next level.
