Savvy expects Mother’s Day retail sales to reach £1.4bn
Latest research by Savvy shows the UK Mother’s Day market will be worth £1.4bn in retail sales in 2024, up 11% on 2023. While inflation is driving some of this growth, our analysis suggests sales of cards, drinks (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic) and flowers are set to increase this year. 74% of UK shoppers plan to celebrate Mother’s Day.
As we saw for Valentine’s Day, the majority are planning to celebrate at home this year (72% of those who plan to celebrate), often taking advantage of meal deal offers. Savvy’s analysis suggests we’ll spend £238m on food to have at home for breakfast, lunch and dinner. 62% of shoppers plan to trade up when buying food, purchasing more expensive premium ranges.
When it comes to finding inspiration for Mother’s Day gifts, 33% will turn to supermarkets, 23% Google and 16% friends and family. While younger shoppers (18-35s) are increasingly turning to social media for inspiration, it is not as common as for other events like Halloween and Valentine’s Day. Among this audience, 26% say they’ll use Instagram for inspiration, while 20% mentioned Tik Tok.
In search of something different, many Mother’s Day shoppers (67%) plan to buy a gift online and 56% say they want a gifts/ cards that are personalised. 65% would rather buy presents from a local or independent retailer.
