Savoring your win is just as important as winning ????

Welcome to Quick Confidence! This weekly letter delivers a spritz of stories, tips and simple actions that will build your confidence and your power. Each quick tip bolsters confidence in your body, mind, and relationships so you can lead yourself and others to greatness.

Have you ever accomplished a goal — maybe even one you longed for — but once you achieved it, you didn’t take the time to enjoy it?

I have! Just last month, I handed in my book manuscript to my publisher. Not only that, but we finalized the book cover — what do you think!? ??

These were thrilling book milestones! And it gave me such joy to see the vibrant, colorful, bright cover. But instead of basking in the feeling of accomplishment, I immediately felt internal pressure to move on to the next thing on my to-do list.?

This experience is common among “achiever” types and is called the hedonic treadmill, a metaphor for the human tendency to never feel satiated and to be in constant pursuit of the next thing. When we’re on that treadmill, our feelings of excitement or joy wear off quickly and we return to our baseline. It prompts us to look for the “next thing” that will “make us feel happy” again.?

But the problem with achieving success and immediately thinking, “Ok, what’s next?”, is that it robs us of the benefits that come with savoring our achievements. Reflecting on and enjoying our wins is just as important as winning itself, and is loaded with psychological benefits that promote well-being.

Fortunately, there’s an antidote to the hedonic treadmill —

I’m talking about training yourself to *savor* positive experiences, which means paying attention to and appreciating positive events and moments.?

Savoring has a way of amplifying the good in our lives, and it’s positively associated with higher levels of subjective well-being and happiness.?

So today I am savoring my book wins with you!

If you’d like to get off the hedonic treadmill and jump on the savoring train, here are three ways to extend more of the good in your life:

Quick Confidence Tips for Savoring Your Wins

  1. Interpersonal: Tell someone else about your win. Just like I’m sharing my book cover reveal with you today! Sharing your accomplishments with others extends your wins. It doesn’t matter whether you share your news with a loved one, friend, colleague or community, as long as you spread the word. The fun thing is that often, others who care about us will point out additional positive aspects we didn’t even notice! Open yourself up to these moments by sharing what happened with those close to you. This can be as simple as interjecting in a conversation: “Would it be ok if I share a recent win with you?”
  2. Embodied: Show appreciation to someone who helped or was part of your win. Think of someone who helped with your win – maybe it’s a partner or child, or an administrative assistant, mentor, or someone else. Tell them specifically how they contributed to your great turn of events. Then thank them! In the case of my new book, Quick Confidence (available for pre-order today!), I have you, my community, to thank for sharing this newsletter, expressing your feedback, and encouraging me. I also have wonderful team members like Eva and Chelsea who helped me, week after week, to publish my content. Sure, it feels nice to receive a gift, but it feels particularly awesome to *give* the gift of gratitude.
  3. Mindset: Occupy it. When something great happens, let yourself get absorbed in it. Daydream about it — feel the goodness of this win in your skin and bones — tune into the happy jolts of energy. I also recommend you make a mental layer or force field to keep it safe and protected so that kill-joy news can’t diminish your enthusiasm. To help with occupying and immersing yourself in your win, become more aware of how your body is feeling — what your thoughts are. This “tuning in” will help you mentally to slow down time and attend more fully to this good moment.

To fully own the goodness of your successes, remember: don’t be so busy that you forget to glance up at the stars. Better yet, ease in and watch them twinkle.

Alright, now it’s your turn: Are there any successes you haven’t taken the time to savor? Well, now is your moment! Share your win with our QC community in the comments. I can’t wait to hear about them!

You can pre-order a copy of my new book Quick Confidence here! I can’t wait to share this book with you, because it wouldn’t be here without you reading and supporting this newsletter. Thank you — I truly couldn’t have done it without you!

I love it! So often people forget to celebrate their achievements, or simply move on so quickly that it hardly even registers as an achievement. Recognising and acknowledging is so important. That way we learn that we can do hard things, get things done, and can lean on that next time. Congratulations on reaching this milestone with your book!
