Saving US Veteran Lives After the War

When our country sends our young men and women (often only 18 -19 yrs. old) to war, surviving combat alive is only half of the battle they must fight. Killing other human beings and watching your closest friends die leaves an inner wound, that for many never heals. And all too often they endure physical wounds too that time and surgeries may not ever correct. These injuries compound their struggles to find gainful employment, return to normal married life, and readjusting to the civilian world.

Our affection and concern for our brave warriors must not end when they return home. Now, we have the long and patient task of restoring their lives!

I was a young pastor in a storefront church in student-town of Isla Vista, adjacent to the University of Santa Barbara, California, in 1970. The Vietnam War had been raging for half a decade. Tens of thousands of US young adults were killed and thousands more maimed. America was torn apart by what seemed to many as a senseless and endless war. College students across the country were rioting and demanding an end to it. Some of those were US veterans of that war. – As I endeavored to get to know the 15,000 students in my community, I sometimes encountered Vietnam Veterans. Listening to them talk as they shared with me always broke my heart and brought tears to my eyes. – Being a new pastor, I was eager to ‘find my calling.’ It was not long before I knew without a doubt that I was to serve our US Combat veterans!

During the last 52 years, America has engaged itself in dozens of conflicts and wars; and, I have sought to assist US Veterans and their families in a variety of ways and ministries. Then in 2006 I started the charity Patriotic Hearts . Since, I have been looking for people that share my heart’s desire to continue the recovery process of all US veterans and their families across the United States. – My endeavors have been fruitful by God’s grace. Over 100,000 US veterans have found employment, and dozens of military marriages and families have been saved.

If you would like to help Patriotic Hearts to continue to serve, even to future generations. Simply help me to spread the word. -- Please Like and Share these articles below.

Mark Baird - I appreciate you highlighting the gap in help that exists between serving on active military duty and then the consequences of it that can happen afterwards.
