Saving the planet, drop by drop
Water in all its myriad forms is a beautiful sight: glaciers, oceans, waterfalls, rapids, the monsoon rains, babbling brooks, magnificent rivers, vast vistas teeming with life. And given that we humans are comprised of up to 60% water, it’s also the very basis of our lives.
But water is a finite resource. The World Health Organisation warns that by 2025, half of the world’s population will be living in water-stressed areas. Britain alone will face widespread drought by 2050, unless leaky pipes are fixed. This sobering prediction shows how climate change, increasing populations, and ageing infrastructure are bringing us to a point of crisis unless we act.
The power of water in the right hands
Every individual can make a difference in the fight to safeguard our water supplies. But technology in particular can play a leading role here – especially in partnership with utility companies.
At Software AG we take water conservation and management seriously, and since 2019, we have been supporting customers with a solution to help water utilities better manage their supply through digital automated water management.
In partnership with telecommunications and technology company Telstra, we are trialing an internet of things (IoT)-based solution at Australia’s Busselton Water that helps this utility manage and optimise its water distribution systems end to end. By combining digital meters and dedicated pressure sensors with Telstra’s IoT network and Software AG’s own IoT analytics solution, we are delivering true water management-as-a-service. A solution that has been officially recognised by the IoT Australia Alliance award for sustainability.
On this World Water Day, let’s continue appreciating the value of water, be mindful of water waste, and spare a thought for people who can only dream of water wastage. Together we can make a difference that will positively impact the generations to come.
