An interview with Susanne Baars, Founder of Global Human Genome Foundation and CEO of Social Genomics. By Ton Dobbe – Chief Inspiration Officer, Value Inspiration
"Every week I interview entrepreneurs and experts from around the world to share their big idea about new forms of value creation and the potential we can unlock when technology augments the unique strengths of people to deliver remarkable impact.
Solving a big global problem I got inspired by the big idea behind Social Genomics, hence I invited founder Susanne Baars to my podcast. We explore what’s required to deliver exponential value – The mindset, what to look for, what questions to answer, how to start, the key choices you need to make, and what people or partners to gather around you…
The thing that triggered me most from my interview "If only we'd have known, we could have prevented this."
Why did this trigger me? What's the bigger value here?
I think this quote sounds familiar to all of us – typically in relation to someone we know (or sadly … knew) that suddenly died, or people in their 30s, 40s, 50s who suddenly develop a severe disease. Fact is, the essence of the quote impacts us on a day to day basis in our business live more often than we realize. How often do we see situations where we wonder out loud: ‘If only we’d have known, we could have prevented this’. And to put that in perspective: How much opportunity is wasted as we keep wondering, without acting?
What’s the more significant question/opportunity that raises?
Imagine we’d not keep wondering about this, but actually take action on it, every time this hits us – just like Susanne has done. What if every time we wonder about this we stop and reflect on the bigger question: “what would be required to prevent this from happening ever again?”. “What information would we need, where’s the source of this information, and how can we bring it together to make it work for us”.
The solution is often right in front of us – we just fail to see it.
As Susanne rightly quoted: “Instead of focusing on problems and solving them, look around you and see the abundance, and really think about how you can use this to build the future with”. “Dare to think big. It's knowing what you know, the unique knowledge that can make a change in the world, and to be able to think differently. Not linear or locally, but try to think, "How would I like to see the future?"
