Saving Major Retail

If the pandemic taught me one thing, it’s that “Brick and Mortar” still has a place in the world of consumers.

I decided if ever there was a time to get into “Online Shopping,” it’s now!

It seemed as if the Tech gods were in charge. It started with the change in 2, not 1, seasons in a lock down. Nowhere to go and browse but your computer!

Admittedly, I was lured by the zillions of pop-up ads with huge markdowns. Like 65% of the population, I am a visual person.

Though I don’t like or trust online shopping for what I believe are a few but very good reasons (color, fabric feel and fit...), what else is there? When it became apparent that we were in this for the long haul, I got into serious ordering.

I started with Talbot’s and LOVED getting what felt like a delivery every day. As an aside, why can’t the FEDEX guy drop the package on the bench outside our front door vs. the ground? Is that what is meant as ground delivery? Several items went back, but I had to go somewhere to return the package. Unlike retail shopping for me I rarely return – try it on, take it, wear it, it’s mine! Try calling them, that is, if you plan to live for 100 more years and you undervalue your time! They say my business is very important to them. So why don’t they have more telephone options and more employees? Bah humbug!

Prior to the pandemic, I shopped at QVC a few times and had pretty good experiences. This time not so much. The same 3 tops have been traveling between their warehouse, NYC and LI. By the time I received the tops, they removed the discount...harrumph! and they ran very large. I can’t be bothered to reorder them 2 sizes smaller and I don’t see them on their site. Sorry Lori Goldstein!

Then there is Keds, worst for service! I ordered their slip-on sneakers on sale in 4 colors. After all, they are a classic summer shoe that won’t likely wear out any time soon. There are no humans to talk to, so if you don’t fit into 1 of their designated “most popular questions/issues,” you are out of luck! I don’t need or want anything that they are selling badly enough to get a degree in Technical Order Placement.

Overall, nothing replaces going to a store for me. I returned more than I bought. I like to touch and try, buy, keep and wear. I know I am part of a growing dying breed, but as long as there is a place to go, I shall!
