Saving Major Retail
Yesterday I visited Hudson Yard as though I were a Tourist.
Having spent the first half of my career in retailing, old lessons die hard and I can’t help but look with a critical eye.
Neiman’s is gorgeous; it is the bright shining monument on the hill. However, I can’t imagine that it will be profitable. I personally like that it has some unfamiliar names and more edited brands than less so. While not highly staffed, the sales people were friendly and helpful, no clusters staring at their devices...that’s a good thing.
Lunch at the Zodiac brought back great memories for me and my friend, nothing beats those popovers.
On the down side, prices were missing on many items, tags with prices were difficult to find and the staff didn’t know the prices. I always believed people are on their best behavior in the courting stage, not so here. In fact one vendor rep underpriced a bag by about 50%. I was seriously considering it because it seemed too good to be true and it was!
While some of the vendors and product were very appealing, a good 35% was not sublime and mostly ridiculous.
With the exception of a pair of earrings for $8500, there was nothing I would pay full price for, if only my husband were reading this!
If I were running the show, Lord and Taylor’s Fifth Avenue location makes more sense to me. It’s closer to Saks and Bergdorf’s, closer to Grand Central and the Theater district.
A vacant Lord and Taylor leaves a big gap like a missing front tooth.
Over all the mall is new, clean, modern, fun and touristy.
