#SaveCQ, a campaign group made up of businesses, arts organisations and members of the community in the Cathedral Quarter area of Belfast, has generated 2,262 objections to the current Royal Exchange redevelopment proposal in just one week.
Campaigners are calling on Castlebrooke Investments to "Develop, Not Demolish" 12 acres of Cathedral Quarter and Rebekah McCabe, chair of #SaveCQ said she was delighted with the public response so far:
"Although the current Royal Exchange redevelopment proposal is just at the pre-planning application stage at the moment, the outpouring of concern and anger that we have seen over the past week about the nature of the current proposal and its potential implications for the Cathedral Quarter area has been phenomenal.
The people who have taken the time to object to the current proposal are saying very clearly that this is not what they want for their city and we very much hope that both Castlebrooke Investments and Belfast City Council will listen to and act on their concerns."
Amongst the key concerns of #SaveCQ about the current redevelopment proposal are: the mass demolition of almost 12 acres of built heritage; the loss of public space in the city centre; the loss of businesses and jobs for existing local traders and the complete lack of any arts provision, in an area which is already successfully synonymous with artistic and cultural businesses and leisure activities
