Save Yourself Instead of Waiting For The Government

Your government doesn’t care about you.
Or maybe it does…
I dunno, you might think your government cares (a lot of people do)
But I’m pretty confident it doesn’t.
Because I’ve spent the last 2 years paying attention to the ludicrous level of hypocrisy and bullshit they’ve all pumped out.
I mean, I was pretty sure governments didn’t care BEFORE March 2020.
But WOW.
They did a great job convincing me since then...
Anyway…. on Monday I made a post on here about Iceland taking their teenagers from the biggest drinkers and smokers in Europe to the healthiest. All in just 20 years.
It seemed to really capture people’s imagination. And a lot of them seemed to either want their government to do something similar…. Or simply bemoaned the fact that their government probably never would.
A lot of these people were British.
And as an Irishman, that’s depressing. Because it definitely rains less in England. So you guys should be at least a TINY bit less moany.
Some people even mentioned the blonde muppet who loves to party and was once the Star In a Reasonably Priced Car on Top Gear.
Which is probably (just about) more pointless than raging about “big pharma”.
But I digress…
The post mentioned two key things:
- The program was paid for by the state
- Icelandic scientists recommend using similar programs elsewhere
It didn’t advocate for socialised medicine.
It didn’t mention “experts”.
It didn’t recommend outsourcing responsibility for your life to ANYBODY.
Now I shared the post because I’ve been sober for 17 years. And for ME that’s been a huge deal.
Also, you can be sure I had my fill of alcohol-fuelled partying in my past life (like certain former PMs). So no need to ever go back.
Because the wheels finally came off about 18 years ago, and I reluctantly checked myself into the Alcohol Treatment unit in Baggot St., Dublin.
The truth is though, at the start of this journey, I had zero intention of stopping drinking for good.
I wanted to get a “quick fix”.
I wanted to trick everybody in my life.
Hell, I wanted to trick myself.
And once I was patched up. I planned to go back to ‘normal’.
Like a lot of people who commented on my post Monday, I was hoping something external would fix my problem. So I could carry on living how *I* wanted to live.
But I had zero clue what I was talking about.
And it would be over a year of attempted moderation, (ie. disaster), before I started to take serious action FOR MYSELF and I finally went to AA (after much encouragement from the counsellors at the ATU).
I’ve come to believe that taking action for oneself is the only way any kind of meaningful change really happens.
So it frustrates me to see LinkedIn full of people “shoulding” all over themselves and other people. They KNOW EXACTLY what needs to happen to fix the world. And they’re happy to talk endlessly about it on LinkedIn (instead of getting on with whatever they’re really here to do).
There’s a ton of people who seem to think the answer to societal problems is for governments to give more of a shit. And if they would only legislate around and prioritise everything from medication, to climate change, to “mental health”.
This is a trap.
Simply put, the key to improving your life and the lives of those around you is not government.
It’s your subconscious mind.
The supercomputer that’s running 95% of your life whether you realise it or not.
(Yeah, it’s running 95% of governments too. And corporations.)
For a lot of people this is a difficult concept to accept.
Put it this way …
When Neo is unplugged from the Matrix, Morpheus tells him he feels he owes him an apology.
“We have a rule. We never free a mind once it’s reached a certain age.
It’s dangerous. The mind has trouble letting go…”
And that’s true in the real world. The mind DOES have trouble letting go.
The older people are, the harder it becomes to get unplugged and really let go.
But letting go is the key to almost everything you could ever want in your life.
Whether that’s freedom, joy, acceptance, relationships, success or a whole bunch of other things.
I can’t promise working with the subconscious will reverse climate change…
Or make the new British PM not be a total idiot…
Or get the rest of the world to think the same way as you…
But I CAN promise you’ll be able to achieve whatever you want.
Ultimately though, I’m curious…
Are you OPEN to the idea of letting go?

2 年Love it Enda, although I missed your Monday post I'm afraid. I find, I always try and on occasion when I do actually succeed in letting go, how things improve and suddenly start getting stuff done efficiently too!

2 年This is an interesting one as governments are made of people, most of whom go in with good intentions to change the system. Yet somehow, when they get in, the system rewires their brains to apathy and burnout. Same can be said about most people taking a job and consciously entering a career path to go into a big multinational to change it within. Agree about saving yourself and not waiting for anyone else. I'm just wondering if there is a way to influence the system through our own internal subconscious retraining. Wishful thinking. I'd be keen to hear any thoughts.
