Save to be rich!

July is savings month and the South African Savings Institute and Ways to Save is hosting four free webinars, starting on Saturday 11 July, to educate South Africans on money matters and the importance of saving.

When I was young, I always knew I wanted to be rich, but I never thought about “how” I was going to get rich. Oftentimes I assumed I would do something great like publish a bestseller, or, why not, win the lotto. I left making money to some extreme one-time event that may or may not happen and did not think that perhaps making millions was less extreme and required more boring, routine, everyday work.

Over time I learnt a lot and became much smarter when it came to money. Then one day, I had a profound realisation. I was reading “The Millionaire Next Door” by Thomas J Stanley and for the first time I realised that I was in charge of becoming rich and that I had to save and invest. It may not sound as glamorous as publishing a bestseller, but it was the best way to actually create the wealth I desired.

Why do I share this with you? Perhaps, you are dreaming of becoming rich one day too and also thinking of this big ‘pie-in-the-sky’ kind of event that will make that happen instead of realising that you can start making yourself rich already. The art of making money and keeping money is not a glamorous thing. Rather it is a beautiful discipline that grows in strength each year.

 Money matters! It is an important resource and can cause great joy or sadness in your life, if you allow it. Do you want to be the master of money? Do you want to feel empowered, confident and in control of your money life?
