THE BUSINESS LANDSCAPE
LIVE SHOPPING
Live sellers on Douyin (China’s version TikTok) claim to be making hundreds of millions of dollars per month. Due this success the UK team at ByteDance has also started live shopping on TikTok, with influencers being at the forefront of this e-commerce movement. However there is definitely a caveat, tele shopping isn’t as popular in the UK as it is in Asia; countries such as South Korea and China have a much larger selection of tele shopping channels and have a much more normalised view towards it. On the other hand the UK has fewer channels and a much more negative/skeptical attitude towards this type of practice. Therefore it’ll be interesting to see how western audiences tackle this barrier.
Influencers are definitely a potential solution to popularising live shopping in the UK, and having a more affiliate or cookie-like tracking function will provide a better view of the consumer journey from exposure to purchase.
Regardless we’re excited to see the development of e-commerce in future years.
