The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs has embarked on a modern approach to facilitate travel, unveiling an electronic visa waiver system for visitors from the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland.
The new provision means that British and Irish nationals keen to visit Saudi Arabia will be granted a single-entry e-visa. This e-visa allows travellers to remain in Saudi Arabia for a duration of up to six months and caters to those travelling for various reasons, including business, tourism, academics, and medical purposes.
Further Simplification of Processes
Efforts to amplify the appeal of Saudi Arabia as a tourist hotspot have been solidified by the introduction of a more accessible application method. Interested visitors can apply for the e-visa by completing a form available on the Unified National Visa Platform, hosted on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website.
Applications can be initiated from 90 days up to two days prior to the intended travel date. Impressively, once dispatched, approved visas are typically received within a 24-hour window via email.
Adding to the innovative efforts, a prompt e-visa alternative was rolled out last month for tourists possessing UK, US, and Schengen visas, or for those who are permanent residents in the aforementioned regions, according to the Saudi Press Agency.
Strengthening Bilateral Relations in Business & Tourism
This shift doesn't only enhance the Kingdom's tourism appeal but also solidifies its business relationships. The e-visa initiative is seen as a boon for professionals, as underscored by the combined endeavours of the Saudi British Joint Business Council and the Saudi/UK Tech Hub in Riyadh.
These innovative measures, championed by Saudi Arabia, are components of the nation's ambitious Vision 2030 strategy. This aims to boost tourism's contribution to the GDP well past the 10% mark.

In a gesture of reciprocity, the UK also introduced an e-visa waiver scheme last year for Saudi nationals and those from the UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Qatar. This digital avenue allows these nationals to bypass traditional visa pathways, opting instead to secure their visa waiver online anywhere between three months to 48 hours ahead of their journey.
Highlighting the popularity and efficacy of the system, the British Embassy in Saudi Arabia reported an astounding 250,000+ Electronic Visa Waiver submissions from Saudi nationals keen to explore the UK.
