SATURDAY MORNING PICTURES STILL LIVE

SATURDAY MORNING PICTURES STILL LIVE

As a kid in the 1950s, I enjoyed the delights of going to our local flea pit, the name we gave to the cinema of our day.

This was in an era before the multiscreen temples to the movies we have now.

Housed in a poorly maintained building, the movie theatre had uncomfortable seats, smelly carpets, and a pervasive odour of cheese derived from the remnants of dropped ice cream.

Even so, it was a palace of fantasy watching the likes of Flash Gordon and the latest cartoons.

Later on in my life it was a place to take a girlfriend to sit in the back row and 'neck' away from the prying eyes of parents. (Don't tell my wife).

So last weekend at 11 am, my darling wife Fran and I rocked up to the Everyman in Muswell Hill to watch the newly released film: ?

The Count of Monte Cristo.

This is the latest adaptation of the classic adventure novel?by French author?Alexandre Dumas.

The story is set against the backdrop of France, Italy, and the?Mediterranean?during the historical events of 1815–1839.

This was a period of significant political and social change from the?Bourbon Restoration?to the reign of?Louis-Philippe of France.

The narrative begins on the day that?Napoleon?left his first island of exile, Elba, marking the start of the?Hundred Days?period of his return to power.

These historical events are not just a setting but a crucial part of the adventure story, which is deeply concerned with themes of hope, justice, vengeance, mercy, and forgiveness.

Before he can marry his fiancée Mercédès,?Edmond Dantès, a French nineteen-year-old?first mate?of the merchant ship?Pharaon, is falsely accused of treason, arrested, and imprisoned without trial in the?Chateau d'If, a grim island fortress off?Marseille.

I will not spoil the rest of the film by disclosing the plot, but suffice it to say it is a rollicking, swashbuckling adventure of betrayal, rebirth, revenge, and retribution.

Why am I telling you this?

Because the story is an example of excellent storytelling.
