Saturday marked the 40th Anniversary of the Miracle on Ice
Saturday marked the 40th anniversary of the famous "Miracle on Ice," in which the United States men's national hockey team defeated the heavily favored Soviet Union team at the 1980 Olympic Winter Games in Lake Placid, NY. The Americans went on to win the gold medal. The Americans stunned the sports world that year with a 4-3 victory. The game also helped to elevate the career of Al Michaels who is now one of the top announcers in all of sports. He was assigned that game in 1980 because he was the only person at ABC who had previously done a hockey game. He said all you needed back then to call play-by-play in a hockey game was the knowledge of icing and offsides.
What a great moment for US sports, gotta love Herb Brooks. Also, one of the greatest sports movies of all-time with Kurt Russell.
