A Saturday of Magic: ROSDC Cluj-Napoca 2024

A Saturday of Magic: ROSDC Cluj-Napoca 2024

Just a week before, on a Saturday morning in Cluj-Napoca, I walked into a room of young students, not yet knowing I was about to witness magic unfold. As a jury member for the Romanian Space Settlement Design Competition (ROSDC), I was about to see these high school students transform into professional engineers in just eight intense hours.

The Day Begins: Professional Simulation at Its Best

At 9:00 AM sharp, the energy in the room was electric. What makes ROSDC unique is how it mirrors real-world engineering practice. Students don't just tackle technical problems – they become part of fully-structured companies, complete with departments, leadership roles, and internal elections.

The day began with a fascinating leadership selection process, as teams elected their company presidents through formal presentations and voting. These young leaders then took charge, organizing their teams with a maturity that would impress any industry professional.

Departments Spring into Action

By mid-morning, the magic was in full swing. Structural design teams huddled over laptops, sketching and iterating on solutions. Operations specialists debated system integrations, while human factors experts ensured all solutions prioritized safety and comfort. Business teams moved between groups, gathering data for their cost analyses and preparing presentations. As one winning team member later shared:

"This year's ROSDC Cluj edition was wonderful. We learned unexpected things and met amazing people along the way."

Rising to the Challenge

The competition's intensity mirrors real-world engineering projects. From 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, teams raced against the clock to analyze requirements, develop solutions, and prepare their presentations. What emerged weren't just student projects – they were professional-grade proposals that demonstrated remarkable technical depth and innovation.

Beyond Technical Excellence

What truly impressed the jury was watching natural leaders emerge across different departments. These young professionals showed remarkable ability to coordinate diverse teams, make decisions under pressure, and ensure cohesive final presentations. Teams efficiently balanced design work, documentation, and presentation preparation, handling last-minute changes with remarkable poise. Another participant reflected:

"For me, ROSDC was more than just a competition – it was a source of inspiration, a place to meet others equally passionate about science and technology."

The Final Hours

As 5:00 PM approached, the atmosphere grew intense. Teams put final touches on their presentations, rehearsed their delivery, and supported each other through the pressure. The quality of work that emerged in just eight hours left the entire jury panel amazed. These weren't just good ideas – they were comprehensive, well-researched solutions that showed remarkable maturity in engineering thinking.

A Bright Future Emerges

What I witnessed that Saturday went far beyond a typical competition. What amazed our jury panel - myself alongside Adrian ?ur?ulea , Andrei Basarab and Raymond Nemeth - was how these young innovators demonstrated crucial capabilities that extend far beyond engineering:

  • Seamless teamwork under pressure
  • Clear communication of complex ideas
  • Effective project management
  • Leadership and decision-making
  • Technical excellence and innovation

Looking Forward

That Saturday in Cluj-Napoca filled all judges with optimism for our future in engineering and technology. These students aren't just learning principles – they're already practicing the professional skills they'll need to succeed in their careers.

To all participants: your ability to organize, collaborate, and deliver under pressure was truly impressive. As one participant beautifully expressed:

"I eagerly await future editions and am grateful for this unique experience!"

The magic of ROSDC isn't just in one Saturday of competition – it's in the spark of inspiration it ignites in every participant. Today they're designing in Cluj-Napoca; tomorrow they'll be shaping humanity's future among the stars. And as for me, I can hardly wait for December 14th, when Timi?oara will host the next ROSDC event, bringing together another group of bright young minds to show us their vision of humanity's future in space.
