ABOUT WOODEN LEAF SATKOSIA (CALL OF THE WILD)

Satkosia Tiger Reserve: Established in 1976 as a wildlife Sanctuary, Satkosia spreads along with the magnificent gorge over the mighty river Mahanadi in Odisha, India.

The area was declared as a Tiger Reserve in 2007, comprising two adjoining wildlife sanctuaries, the Satkosia Gorge Sanctuary and Baisipalli Wildlife Sanctuary.

Satkosia has tremendous genetic and ecological importance. It has a significant elephant population and natural habitat of two endangered species freshwater crocodiles namely Gharial and Mugger. Around 38 species of mammals, 161 species of birds, 27 species of reptiles, 4 species of amphibians, and 183 species of fishes are found in the reserve. 12 Orchids have been recorded so far. The presence of Gorge has added turtles, terrapins, crabs, mollusks, and other amphibians to the bio richness of the Sanctuary.

Over 400 plant species comprising 126 trees, 98 shrubs, 125 herbs, and 51 climbers have been identified in the reserve.

The jungle is full of Saguan, Piasal, Chakunda, Jhaun, some medicated and other trees for different industrial needs like paper, ayurvedic medicines, and other industries.

There is only one private accommodation in the dense forest i.e. Wooden Leaf Lodges & Resorts – Satkosia. The resort is within an area of 5 acres of land in the dense forest.

Climate: Summer months are very hot; the maximum day temperature varies from 45 C to 47 C in the month of May and June. After June the temperature starts dropping appreciably with the onset of monsoon. The months to visit the place starts from August to March. December is the coolest month when the temperature at night varies between 6 C to 11 C. Humidity is generally high in the sanctuary. The annual average rainfall varies from 1250 mm to 1700 mm. The landscape is hilly with moderate to steep slopes. The elevation is around 350 meters from the sea level.

Activities: Lots of adventure activities like Rope Climbing, Net Walking, Rock climbing, Trekking, Angling, etc. can be done. Be a little ranger with the forest people participating in their various programs.

Sightseeing: During your stay at Satkosia you can have the following full-day sightseeing as per your choice:

§ Jungle Safari at Satkosia Tiger Reserve, Tikarpada crocodile project, and Boat Cruise of one hour at Mahanadi.

§ Full day visit to Binkeyee, Deoljhari temple, Tuluka, Chhotkei and Baghmunda.

§ Full day visit to Maa Tarini Temple Keonjhar or Kapilas, Joranda and Dhenkanal sightseeing.

§ Full day visit to Puri and Bhubaneshwar sightseeing.

§ You can also have half-day sightseeing to Labangi or Derjang Dam and Jagannath temple in Angul and this can be done on the day of your morning arrival.

You can leave early morning from the resort and come back late evening or at night to Satkosia on the same day after doing the sightseeing.

 Satkosia Wildlife Sanctuary: Satkosia Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the largest wildlife century in Odisha surrounded by a lot of lush green forests.

Satkosia Tiger Reserve: Satkosia Tiger Reserve is a tiger reserve located in the Angul district of Odisha, India covering an area of 988.30 km2. It is located where the Mahanadi River passes through a 22 km long gorge in the Eastern Ghats mountains. The tiger reserve is located in the Eastern Highlands moist deciduous forests ecoregion.

Satkosia Gorge Sanctuary: Satkosia Gorge Sanctuary owes its name to the narrow stretch of River Mahanadi i.e. “ Sat – kosh” or seven miles long near Tikarapada, 60 km south of Angul.

Deojhar Waterfall: About Deojhar Falls. Located 80 KM ahead of the Ansupa Lake along the same route is Deojhar. It's a beautiful waterfall set amidst the forest of Eastern Ghats .

Champanath Temple: Champanath temple is famous in Cuttack, Narasinghpur, which situated at the undivided Cuttack district’s Narasinghpur. The famous Shiva Peetha, Champanath of Champeshwar is very much popular in Odisha, Cuttack, Narasinghpur.

Bhattarika Temple: Bhattarika Temple is located on the Mahanadi River, in Sasanga village in the tehsil Baramba, Cuttack district, India. It is dedicated to the Hindu Goddess Maa Bhattarika worshipped as a manifestation of Shakti.

Maniabandha Buddhist Temple: Maniabandha in Baramba block under Athgarh sub-division in Cuttack district will be the best place to be in, if you want to experience the Buddhist way of life. A tour down Buddhist lane- Visit Maniabandha in Cuttack for its weaving activities and temples.

Nilamadhab Temple of Kontilo: Standing elegantly on the banks of the river Mahanadi, Kantilo is famous for the temple of Lord Nilamadhaba, on top of the twin hills with surrounding green forests. Lord Nilamadhaba occupies a prominent position in the cult of Lord Jagannath. This temple is a miniature form of the Sri Jagannath Temple at Puri and observes similar rites rituals.
