Satisfied, lacking absolutely nothing

Satisfied, lacking absolutely nothing

We know that the richest people are not the #happiest people. The most successful are not necessarily the most #satisfied. Most of the things that we spend our entire lifetime pursuing do not guarantee #fulfilment at the end of our lives. That said, should we not go after big achievements? Well, that’s not the point.

Some people have very little but are rich in happiness. When I was in the graduate school, my wife and I had nothing significant to our names – no house, no land, and our net worth was nothing you may consider significant. But we lived like we lacked nothing – we were happy and satisfied. Then a few days ago, I asked myself a tough question: Now that I may say that we have a few things, are we now happier than 12 years ago?

I discovered the only reason my wife and I are still happy is the fact that we derive our happiness not from anything we have or do not have. We have learnt to be okay with whatever we have. We derive our satisfaction and happiness from the inner peace that we both maintain, knowing that whatsoever anyone has or acquire in this world is only temporary. It is a perspective.

Meanwhile, you can buy temporary happiness for yourself. You can buy cars, shoes, houses, etc, and be happy. You can set a big goal, achieve it and be happy. You can even drink a glass of wine or drink to a stupor and be happy. But that lasts only for a moment or a short period. However, what you and I need is the lasting peace and happiness, acquired by contentment.

You should learn to look inward, be content and not allow what you have or do not have to determine the state of your life. Every day you wake up, say “I am satisfied, lacking absolutely nothing”.

Thanks for the reminder, Dele. As a grad student, I find it challenging to remember that inner peace and contentment mindset when so much time is spent reaching the next milestones (graduation, house, etc).
