[SATIRE] Near Bridge Collapse in Providence: Billboard Owners' "Traffic Generation" Strategy Goes Awry

Below is a satirical article, for my fellow Rhode Islander's enjoyment.

In a bizarre turn of events, the collapse of the I-195 bridge in Providence, Rhode Island, has been linked to an outlandish scheme concocted by billboard owners in a bid to increase viewership of their towering roadside faces. Authorities investigating the catastrophic failure have uncovered a shocking plot that involves a reckless attempt to divert traffic for the sake of capturing more eyeballs on their advertisements.

Sources close to the investigation have revealed that a group of billboard owners schemed to boost their advertising revenue by engineering a traffic jam of colossal proportions. Their grand plan was to strategically instigate a bridge shutdown, ensuring an influx of diverted vehicles would pass by their billboards, thereby maximizing viewership and engagement.

"Traffic jams are the perfect opportunity for our billboards to shine!" exclaimed an anonymous member of the outdoor advertising group. "What better way to ensure motorists have ample time to admire our ads than by causing a bridge collapse?"

The twisted logic behind this nefarious strategy aimed to exploit the inconvenience of thousands of commuters for the sake of a marketing ploy, highlighting the lengths some would go for profit.

However, their scheme took a turn for the worse when the plan went catastrophically awry, leading to the unexpected collapse of the bridge. Emergency crews were dispatched to the scene to manage the chaos, while baffled commuters were left stranded in a sea of confusion, unaware of the true motive behind the disaster.

Authorities have condemned this outrageous act

as a reckless and dangerous maneuver that endangered countless lives and infrastructure. The billboard owners involved in the scheme are now facing severe legal consequences for their misguided attempt to manipulate traffic for profit.

As the investigation unfolds, it serves as a cautionary tale, highlighting the absurd lengths to which some would go in pursuit of advertising dollars. It also underscores the importance of ethical practices in advertising, emphasizing that generating traffic for billboards should never come at the expense of public safety and infrastructure.

In the wake of this calamity, the billboard industry faces heightened scrutiny, and discussions regarding stricter regulations and ethical guidelines are underway to prevent such ludicrous attempts to exploit public spaces for commercial gain in the future. The collapse of the I-195 bridge stands as a stark reminder that no billboard view is worth risking lives or compromising the integrity of vital infrastructure.

I don't understand how these owners were thinking this would do anything to impact their viewership. Traffic is audited once a year - with no specific date set. They would have no way of correlating this one day of increased viewership to their annual numbers?
