As the Sasol Solar Challenge enters Day 6 excitement is reaching a fever pitch!
With only a few days left in this thrilling competition, the atmosphere is electric as teams push their solar-empowered vehicles to the limit. The competition has been fierce – with teams showcasing exceptional skills, commitment, and determination.
Teams are approaching the final stretch, and the anticipation is building for what promises to be an exhilarating conclusion to this year’s challenge.
As the teams continued their journey from Secunda, Mpumalanga to Lutzville, Western Cape, they have collectively travelled an impressive distance of over 10?000 kilometres. This long-trek is not without challenges, and penalties have been imposed on some teams for various infractions.?
Common penalties include exceeding speed limits, improper vehicle maintenance and failure to adhere to the designated route. The rules are essential to ensure fair competition and maintain safety standards throughout the challenge.
Director of the Sasol Solar Challenge, Rob Walker said: “Penalties serve as a reminder of the importance of discipline and adherence to regulations, which are vital in any competitive environment.”
“It’s crucial for SSC to expose and teach young learners about microbotics and the solar cars. They are our future” Walker concluded as the schools expo came to an end at Vrendendal High School.?
Six-year-old Cronje Vermeulen’s eyes sparkled as he watched the solar cars glide past him. The Brunel Solar Team was so gracious and lent the little boy their helmet to take pictures, adding to an unforgettable experience for a hopeful future solar car driver.?

Overall day six was a resounding success, blending competition with education and community engagement while the teams pressed on towards the ultimate destination.
