Read our new report on the biodiversity risks of alternative fuels for shipping and aviation

Last week we published a new report,?Fuelling nature: how e-fuels can mitigate biodiversity risk in EU aviation and maritime policy.

The EU talks about the “twin crises” of climate and biodiversity. But it doesn’t have to sacrifice its progress on one to resolve the other –?e-fuel investment is the path to ensuring that both are properly addressed. Our new report?investigates how four alternative fuel scenarios to meet the EU’s maritime and aviation decarbonisation goals would impact biodiversity.

Our findings showed that:

  • Using biofuels to decarbonise EU shipping and aviation puts biodiversity at serious risk.
  • E-fuels are the only solution compatible with both climate and biodiversity targets.

Find our full results and policy recommendations in?the report, and watch our?video explainer?below.

Our latest Industry Insights blog series

Last month we launched our new Industry Insights blog series, where we sit down with? SASHA?members to hear about the ins and outs of their companies, their role in decarbonising aviation and shipping, and how government policy can help them overcome the challenges they face. Read our latest two interviews with?SASHA?members?Modular Clinton Globaland?SAF+ International Group?on our blog.

SASHA supports new Call to Action on Green Hydrogen and Green Shipping

In Baku last week, leaders from across the shipping value chain came together at COP29 to commit to act faster to accelerate the roll out of green hydrogen for shipping while centring an equitable transition. We are proud to be supporting the?Call to Action on Green Hydrogen and Green Shipping?alongside our knowledge partners the?Green Hydrogen Organisation.?

Our collaboration with Climate Catalyst

Does the transition to alternative aviation fuels properly account for its impact on people and nature? Learn more in this briefing from the SASHA Coalition and Climate Catalyst.

We partnered with Climate Catalyst to develop a briefing looking at the integration of environmental, equity, and just transition considerations in the alternative aviation fuels landscape. Key insights from this briefing include:

  • An analysis of how different alternative aviation fuels impact biodiversity, land use, and critical resources.
  • An assessment of equity implications across the fuel supply chain, from feedstock sourcing to production.
  • Just transition considerations and necessary criteria for aviation workers and impacted communities.
  • Insights and recommendations for investors, policymakers, and industry stakeholders to drive an equitable fuels transition for this sector.?
