National Earth Observations and Space Secretariat
Integrated use of Earth observations for societal benefit in South Africa
NEOSS is pleased to announce that our Manager, Advocate Lulu Makapela, participated in the 31st Workshop on Space Technology for Socio-Economic Benefits, hosted by the Italian Space Agency (ASI) in Milan, Italy, from 11-13 October 2024, with the support of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) . The workshop, themed "Space Sustainability as a Game-Changer for Development," provided an invaluable platform to discuss how space applications can drive socio-economic development across sectors like agriculture, transport, and telecommunications.
Makapela contributed to Panel 2, moderated by Masami Onoda of JAXA, where she presented an overview of South Africa’s legal framework for achieving space sustainability. Her presentation explored critical legal frameworks designed to ensure the long-term sustainability of space activities, addressing the environmental impact of the space industry. The workshop also provided valuable insights into innovative approaches for sustainable space operations.
The event offered outstanding networking opportunities, allowing NEOSS to engage with global experts and stakeholders committed to ensuring sustainable space practices. We are deeply grateful to UNOOSA and the DSI for making this participation possible and for the ongoing efforts to advance sustainable space activities.
NEOSS is an initiative of the DSI, that is hosted and managed by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) .
