Duvalier Westbank Condominiums

5: 30p.m.

“Skhandul,” Sarah began pleading on Skhandul’s voicemail as she sat in her SUV. The message in blood in the elevator was more than she could take. She decided to wait in her SUV until Josh came down with a couple of more boxes.

“Skhandul, this is Sarah Lamb! I’ve been texting you all day from a burner phone. This is my real phone number. I am at Duvalier Westbank Condominiums. This used to be your father’s property. It was taken from your father by Millie Duvalier because he was supposed to be dead. He is very much alive. You have until midnight to save your father’s property, and hopefully me, from Millie Rose Duvalier.”

Sarah winced in pain from her beating that morning. The medicine had worn off. Her medicine was still in her condo unit. She continued speaking into Skhandul’s voicemail, hoping that Skhandul would pick up, or call her back, soon,.

“Your brother is coming to evict me from unit 204 before midnight. This is your chance, Skhandul, to confront him about your father. You have the power to stop Millie and your father from destroying you and Sterling’s inheritance. This may be the only time. If you don’t come for me, come to save your share of the property before midnight. I’ve done my part. The next time you may hear about me, if at all, I’ll be in jail, or dead.”

Sarah disconnected the phone when she saw the light go off over the elevator. She closed her eyes and quickly layed across the torn, plastic seats, hoping that no one could see her through the dark tinted windows on her SUV.

“Why didn’t Sarah call me?” Katie Nguyen complained to Leslie-Jean as she got out of the backseat of Hakeem’s unmarked unit. “You are pregnant, you can’t be running up and down stairs chasing behind Millie Duvalier and her klan.

“You’re right, Katie,” Leslie-Jean agreed as Hakeem held the door open for both women to enter the lobby of the Duvalier Westbank Condominiums. “Sarah and I connected earlier today in a meeting with Millie at the corporate office. She was pretty beaten up! That's probably why she called me first. It was nothing personal!”

“Did Millie beat her up?” Katie asked half sarcastically, half seriously. “You understand why I asked, right?”

“I asked her the same thing,” Leslie-Jean answered over her shoulder. They both waved at the Security Officer in the lobby.

“Please, sign in,” the guard handed the clipboard to Katie.. “Who are you guys coming to visit tonight?”

Hakeem flashed his NOPD badge. “Unit 204, Ms. Sarah Lamb.”

“Yes, I just saw her briefly on the elevator going down to the garage's second level. She has a young boy with her taking boxes to her vehicle.”

“We’ll go up to her unit and wait for her there,” Hakeem suggested.

Katie pressed the button for one of the elevators.

As the three waited for one of the elevators, screams could be heard through the elevator shaft.

“Where did those screams come from?” Katie asked, shocked by the intensity. She looked at Hakeem. “Someone needs help?”

“Sounds like they came from the garage!” The security officer answered, putting his hand on his gun on his left hip.

“I’ll go check it out,” Hakeem answered as he pushed the buttons to rush the elevator.

The middle elevator dinged and opened. Inside the elevator, Josh was holding boxes from Sarah's unit. Next to him was a young girl. They both looked frightened.

“Are you kids okay? Come on out of the elevator!” Hakeem checked the kids to make sure they were ok. “Les, find out where they live and take them to their condo. Katie, go check out Sarah’s unit to see if she is okay.”

“Where are you going?” Leslie-Jean asked as she pulled the kids from the elevator.

“Security and I are going to the garage to check out where those screams came from!”

The security officer hurried over to Hakeem’s side. Both officers kept their hands on their guns as the elevator doors closed.

“Don’t you have a key to control these elevators?” Hakeem asked the security officer.

“Yes sir,” the guard answered as he unhooked a large ring of keys from his belt.

“Where are your parents?” Leslie-Jean asked Josh and the little girl with him.

“They are upstairs,” Josh answered. “This is my sister, Whitley.”

“Hi, Whitley!” Leslie-Jean smiled at both of them. “Can you call your parents to let them know where you are?”

Josh pulled his cell phone out of his pocket.

“Let me call momma!” Whitley demanded, taking the phone from her big brother.

“You are so brave!” Leslie-Jean marveled at Whitley. “How old are you?”

“I’m five!” Whitley answered as she dialed her brother’s phone. “Momma, we’re in the lobby, and a lady screamed in the garage, and this police lady wants to talk to you!”

Leslie-Jean took the phone and began speaking with the mother of Josh and Whitley., clearing up that she was not a 'police lady'.

5:55p.m.

Katie checks out Sarah’s Condo unit (#204)

Upstairs, Katie approached Sarah’s condo unit. The door to the unit was opened. “Hello?” Katie slowly opened the door.

“Hello?” Katie called again. “Sarah, it’s me, Katie!” The unit was dark. Katie tried several light switches and lamps, none of them came on.?

Katie walked slowly throughout the unit, calling out to Sarah.

“Hello, Katie!” A man’s voice called out from the dark. “Funny meeting you here. Looking for a story for your 10 o’clock news show?”

“Who is that?” Katie called out. “Where is Sarah? What did you with to Sarah?”

“Nothing,” answered the stranger. “We are here to help her move out before midnight. Are you here to help her move, too?”

“Who are you?” Katie repeated. “Show yourself!”

The man stepped out of the shadows. “It is an honor and a pleasure to meet you, Ms. ‘Katie Nguyen, WINtv Channel 40 News, Breaking News, Reporter’.” ?

Katie immediately recognized him. While she had expressed to Leslie-Jean her fantasy about meeting the ex-convict, the circumstances were less than desirable as he mocked her at that moment.

“Sterling Diamond!” Katie acknowledged, her voice shaking. “What are you doing here? Is Sarah your next murder victim?”

“Sorry, Katie,” Sterling answered. “You are not going to get a story out of me for your 10 p.m. nightly news. We have an assignment to complete, and you are holding us up!”

“Who is ‘we’?” Katie asked him.

Before Sterling could answer, someone quickly grabbed Katie from behind with someone else placing a thick cloth over her face. Katie passed out in the arms of the strangers.

“Put her in the bedroom,” Sterling ordered his two assistants who previously were standing in the dark in opposite corners of the unit. "Gag her and tie her up. She is not our priority. Our little Lamb, Sarah, should be back any minute,” He closed the door to the unit, leaving it partially opened, again.

“Hopefully, those kids don’t come back with her, it is getting crowded in here!” Sterling directed his comments to his accomplices who were busy tying Katie up and putting her in the main bedroom.

2nd-level basement garage? 6:10 p.m.

Hakeem and the security guard stepped out of the elevator once the doors opened into the low-lit garage. Hakeem signaled the guard to sweep from the right with his flashlight to make sure no one was hiding in the shadows.

Meanwhile, Hakeem noticed that an SUV was sitting in front of the elevators with its flashing lights on. Moving across the front of the elevators to the left, Hakeem held his gun at shoulder height, leading to his survey of the one elevator where the doors were locked open.

As quickly as the Detective looked into the stalled elevator, he quickly recoiled to make sure that no one was hiding in it.

"What the hell?" The Detective was surprised by the amount of what appeared to be blood spray-painted inside of the elevator. What amount of blood had not run completely down the back of the elevator, appeared to read:

EVICTION: #204 Midnight!!

Seeing no one in the elevator, the detective turned his attention to the SUV. The deep-tinted windows made it difficult to see if anyone was in the vehicle. Keeping his gun in front of him, and looking left and right, he slowly approached the vehicle from the rear.

“Officer, I didn’t see anything unusual in the garage,” the guard slowly approached the vehicle from the opposite side. “Anyone in the elevator?”

“No?” Hakeem answered and then asked. “Whose vehicle is this?”

“This is Ms. Lamb’s vehicle, from unit #204,” the guard answered. I know she came down here with one of those kids earlier.

“Do the cameras outside or inside the elevators work?” The detective asked as he looked around SUV for anything suspicious about the vehicle.

“No,” the security guard responded. “Vandals painted across them to hide being down here.”

“Ms Lamb! This is Detective Sgt. Morris with the NOPD!” Both men kept their guns trained at the vehicle. “If you are in the vehicle, roll all of your windows down! If you have any weapons, throw them out! Announce that you don’t have any weapons! Come out with your hands up!”

The windows were rolled down. Detective Morris stepped up to the back of the SUV to make sure no one was hiding in the back seat or luggage compartment.

Sarah slowly opened the door. “I don’t have any weapons. Did Leslie-Jean come with you?”

“Turn around and face the vehicle,” Detective Morris directed Sarah. “Place your hands against the vehicle.”

Sarah complied. “I am the one who called for help, why are you treating me like a criminal?”

“A lot of police officers are severely injured or killed by people who called for help. It’s nothing personal.”

He moved in to search her. “I need to conduct a preliminary search of you for weapons, is that okay?”

“Yes,” Sarah answered. “But I am not the one who created all of this mess! You should be talking to Randall Diamond and Miss Millie."

“Turn around and put your hands in front of you,” ?Detective Morris ordered her, ignoring her information. He then placed her in handcuffs, front-facing.

“Am I under arrest?” Sarah asked. “Do I need a lawyer?”

“I don’t know, Ms. Lamb, do you?”

Morris read Sarah her rights.

“Do you have a way of securing that elevator, making sure no one uses it?” Morris asked the security guard.

“Yes, I’ll turn it off right now,” The security guard answered. “I also have some crime tape, I can prevent anyone from going into the area as well.”

“Great!” The detective approved. “I’m calling the crime scene to check the area out, but I need you to go with me to escort Ms. Lamb to your security office for questioning.”

“Look, before we step on this elevator,” Morris stopped before entering the elevator. “ I need to record that you were injured when we discovered you, Ms. Lamb. Are you in need of medical attention at this time?”

“No,” Sarah answered. “I was injured this morning. I already went to Charity Hospital for care.”

“Thank you for that,” Detective Morris acknowledged as he recorded her physical condition and her statement. "Leslie-Jean gave me a snapshot on the way over. I'm sorry to hear that you were badly beaten this morning."

While the security guard signaled for an elevator, the Detective read Sarah her Miranda Rights.

“Do you understand these rights as I have read them to you, Ms. Lamb?”

As Sarah was escorted to the lobby, she saw Leslie-Jean and two children standing with Ms. Jackson. Leslie-Jean looked at Sarah with the handcuffs on and rushed over to see what had happened.

“Is she under arrest?” Leslie-Jean asked her fiance’. “She called us for help, why the handcuffs?”

“Have you talked to Katie?” Hakeem asked Leslie-Jean, not bothering to answer her question about the handcuffs.

Leslie-Jean pulled out her cell and spoke into it, "Call Katie!"

“Hello!” A man’s voice answered Katie's phone. “You have reached Katie Nguyen’s voicemail. Katie cannot come to the phone right now, she is allll tied up!”

“Who is this? What did you do with Katie?” Leslie-Jean demanded. “Where is Katie?”

“Is this Leslie-Jean?” Sterling asked sarcastically. “We’ve met before! Don’t you remember? You interviewed me when I first got out of prison! You do remember me, don’t you?”

“Sterling Diamond has Katie,” Leslie-Jean covered the speaker on the phone and whispered to her soon-to-be husband. "How are we going to get her out of Sarah’s unit?”

“I have more units responding,” Morris responded. “I have them surrounding the condo units now."

“Sterling,” Leslie-Jean spoke into her phone. “I’m coming up to Sarah’s unit. I’ll be unarmed.”

“Come on up!” Sterling encouraged her. “Bring your police boyfriend, too. Oh, and bring Sarah with you. She is our guest of honor! Don’t want to conduct an eviction without the guest of honor, now do we?”

"This is 7710 to Dispatch!"

"God ahead, 7710!"

"Do I have the Duvalier Condominiums surrounded now?"

"10-4! Precede with caution!"

Just then, a woman was escorted into the lobby by an NOPD Officer. Her high heels echoed through the lobby. Her long beaded dress, with its split up to the hip, attracted on-lookers already curious about the young woman in handcuffs. "Good evening, I'm here to see Sarah Lamb," the lady announced. "Thank you, Officer, the lady said as the officer walked back towards the front entrance.

"I'm Sarah Lamb!" Sarah announced. "I'm a little indisposed thanks to these handcuffs and Detective Sgt. Morris here. Who might you be? I not expecting any more company right now, especially dressed like you."

Detective Morris, Leslie-Jean, and Katie looked intriguingly at the well-dressed woman with her untimely smile, and two canine teeth encrusted with diamonds.

"Sarah," the young woman put out her hand to shake Sarah's hands even though she was in handcuffs. "I'm Skhandul, the Handful, Diamond. You've been texting, and calling me all day, baby. I just thought I would throw on a few pieces and come see what the fuss was all about."

"Well, hello," The Security Officer adjusted his tie and hat, inching closer to the tall, shapely, and stylishly dressed woman.

"Standby, Security," Detective Morris directed him. "I believe we can take it from here. Thanks for all of your help."

"Security Officer Danson, Terry Danson," he appeared to direct his remarks toward Skhandul Diamond, who had made sure to lock eyes only with Sarah.

"Now, what is this about my daddy being alive?" Skhandul asked Sarah in a hushed tone. "Where is he?"
