SAPA Run - How running helped me
I recently completed my first 21KM mountain trail run in Sapa, Vietnam, thanks to Vertex portfolio company Coolmate, who sponsored the event. The stunning views of Sapa and the seamless event organization made it an unforgettable experience. Honestly, I never thought I’d enjoy a trail run this much—and now I can’t wait to do it again.
It’s wild to think that just 18 months ago, I barely ran at all. I’d actually avoided running for almost a decade after a knee injury. Now, I find myself encouraging everyone—especially those looking for an easy sport to pick up—to give it a try. Let me share a few benefits I’ve personally experienced
Back Pain Relief
In mid-2022, I transitioned into a part-time venture partner role (and only came back early this year as a full-time Partner) at Vertex because of serious upper back pain. I tried everything—doctor’s advice, friends’ suggestions—and even considered surgery, hoping it would fix everything. Luckily, I didn’t go through with the surgery. Running turned out to be a surprising solution. It seems to work because it gets the upper body moving just enough—without being too intense. Fun fact: I’ve realized more than half the people I meet deal with some kind of back problem. If that’s you, give running a shot. It might just work magic for you too.
Mental Stress
I didn’t even realize how much mental stress I’d been carrying over the last few years. Life was going well, but I got into a bit of a middle-life-crisis and found myself grappling with questions about the meaning of life in this next chapter. In hindsight, I’m sure some of that stress contributed to my back pain. If you’re dealing with chronic pain, I highly recommend checking out Healing Back Pain: The Mind-Body Connection by Dr. John E. Sarno.
Running has been a game-changer for me when it comes to mental stress. It’s like moving meditation—releasing dopamine, forcing you to think less and giving you that feeling of accomplishment. Sure, some friends say it’s boring, but honestly, sitting still to meditate is even more boring. Maybe that’s the point. Our brains are so overstimulated these days that learning to embrace boredom and clear your mind could be the real benefit—whether through meditation or running.

Discipline
I don’t need to go on about all the health benefits of running, but one thing I’ve noticed is how it’s made me more disciplined overall—especially when it comes to health. When you’ve got a running event coming up in a few weeks or months, you naturally start planning better, eating better, and staying on track. My weight has come down from 78kg to about ~72kg and has been relatively stable. It is the next run keeping me disciplined.
Overcoming Knee Issues
About that old knee injury—I’ve learned from the running community that proper training is key. Strengthening the muscles around your knees helps take the pressure off, and maintaining the right posture makes a big difference. Running actually helped me to retain a better life with better mobility.
Oh, and I’m also sharing a picture of the incredible sea of clouds viewed from the peak of Fansipan—a true bonus reward of a mountain trail trip. Seriously, moments like these make it all so worth it.
As we wrap up 2024, I encourage everyone to take a little more time to focus on their health. Who knows, maybe I’ll see you at a trail run in the new year!
