SAP Rise Private Cloud: Is the promise of a cost-effective, one-stop-shop, single-invoice, all-in offering true?

With 2025, 2027, and 2030 approaching quickly, SAP RISE Private and Public Cloud is a worldwide focus for SAP to move customers off ECC onto S/4 HANA. SAP wants to move revenue from lumpy perpetual license to SaaS-based 'predictable' revenue, capturing more of the ecosystem spend along the way.

Depending on the region, SAP is experiencing varying degrees of acceptance.

Latin American SAP customers, for example, are not interested, preferring to maintain control of costs and systems. In contrast, SAP customers in Australia and New Zealand seem more accepting.

The promise is a cost-effective, one-stop-shop, single-invoice, all-in offering, but there are gotchas for the poorly researched.

SAP RISE Private Cloud and Security

For example, during a recent SAP-sponsored SAP RISE Private Cloud webinar on security, one could be forgiven for coming away thinking SAP has it all covered. In short, they dont. The material was somewhat misleading at best and deceptive at worst. A quick read of the roles and responsibilities document shows that almost all SAP system security is still in the customer's remit.

The Future of SAP Solution Manager

Many SAP customers are realising that big changes are afoot in SAP solution management. Solution Manager is out of support after 2027 and out of reach once off ECC. Cloud ALM is not like for like and a number of system support tools will not be available.

Fortunately, there are many cost-effective third-party tools available to make up the difference.

SAP RISE Private Cloud Edition– Is it driveaway, no more to pay?

Once one gets over the ‘do I want to trust all this to SAP’ question, which is an entirely different discussion, the RISE offering looks very attractive. It is sort of a ‘driveaway, no more to pay’ kind of deal—or is it? To understand this, one needs to look closely at the details; after all, the devil is in the details.

Balancing Cost, Control, and Coverage: Navigating SAP RISE Private Cloud Security

A standard RISE contract includes a limited number of security services. Things like non-critical SAP security notes application, monitoring, testing, user management and remediation activities are up to the customer to manage in-house or negotiate a Cloud Application Services package with SAP, which SAP will control.

It is a matter of cost, control, and security coverage.

Delivering a problem-free SAP system refresh: Is it fair to expect a perfect result every time?

I recently spoke with an SAP customer and its SAP Support Partner about an ongoing area of dissatisfaction. The customer found that the SAP system refreshes delivered by their Support Partner were consistently inconsistent, and post-copy problems always occurred.

Of course, the Support Partner was disappointed and felt that this was on his team and they should be getting it right.

But is this a reasonable expectation?
