Now that I have completed and submitted (and finalized!) my presentation for BI2017, I’m preparing for the SAP Partner Testing for SAP BusinessObjects Cloud. This testing is once again taking place at the SAP offices in Vancouver. I took part in this Partner session last year and received a lot of benefit from the 3 day testing. We were very exhaustively taken through every aspect of SAP BusinessObjects Cloud including accessing data, modeling the data, building visualizations and stories, creating digital boardrooms and establishing a planning model. One of the more technically in depth sessions involved the configuration of the SAP Web Dispatcher to facilitate a connection to an on-premises SAP HANA system. Hence the topic of my discussion at BI2017.
During the SAP Partner Testing, we had the opportunity to speak directly with the management, developers and graphic designers behind the SAP BusinessObjects Cloud system. This provided me personally with insights into the thoughts behind the development of the BOC system. I had the opportunity to present our team’s findings to the managers, developers and graphic designers. I was pleased that our comments were so well received! Since then, I could certainly see how some of our thoughts were implemented in today’s platform.
I’m not sure how many of you have been able to access SAP BusinessObjects Cloud to see how it works first hand. I wanted to take my last article one step further and show you how we can build some quick visualizations based on an on-premises SAP HANA installation.
The first step is to create SAP HANA models (Calculation, Analytic or Attribute) views that will be accessed within the SAP BusinessObjects Cloud system. Here you can see a model that I’ve created for my BI2017 session.
The second step is to connect to the models through the Live Connection that was created in the previous article. After connecting to the data, this “Explorer” type view shows you the data being accessed in SAP HANA. You’ll have to trust me that there’s no trickery going on here. I am connecting to my SAP HANA instance in my local data center.
Finally, we generate applicable visualizations and use those visualizations within the Digital Boardroom feature of SAP BusinessObjects Cloud.
This can then be presented in a standard three screen layout supported by the SAP BusinessObjects Cloud system.
And that’s it. These steps allow you to take full advantage of your on-premises SAP HANA system while keeping your data stored in your local SAP HANA installation. No data has been pushed to the cloud!
