CIO Roundtable -- AI, Cloud, and SAP: Navigating Business Transformation in the Digital Era

The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing into SAP ’s enterprise resource planning (ERP) ecosystem is reshaping the business landscape, according to experts who participated in a recent CIO Online executive discussion held under Chatham House Rules.?

In the wake of that session, BizTechReports convened Don Mishory , Managing Partner at Storm Reply , and Jaydeep R. Rathore, Senior Innovation Architect at Amazon Web Services (AWS) , for a vidcast to explore the strategic, operational, financial, and technological implications of this transformation.

As the 2027 SAP migration deadline approaches, enterprises are not only accelerating their shift to SAP S/4HANA in the cloud but also integrating AI-driven automation to enhance efficiency, improve decision-making, and drive agility. However, the transition presents challenges in governance, cost management, and workforce adaptation, making AI adoption a complex yet necessary step for future-ready businesses.

SAP has positioned AI as a core pillar of its future ERP strategy, offering enterprises new capabilities to optimize business processes. In addition to taking advantage of AI already deeply embedded in SAP’s Business Technology Platform (BTP), many organizations are also leveraging other AI tools today, even before full-scale cloud migration.

“Companies do not have to wait for SAP’s 2027 migration deadline to integrate AI,” Mishory said. “AI-powered decision-making and automation can be implemented in existing SAP environments to improve customer interactions, supply chain optimization, and predictive analytics.”

The shift toward cloud-based ERP represents a major break from traditional monolithic architectures that have been replaced with highly modular, scalable deployments. Rathore noted that SAP environments vary widely from one organization to another, which is why AWS Bedrock allows enterprises to integrate multiple AI models rather than relying on a single, all-encompassing solution.

Nearly three-in-five CEOs optimistic about global economic outlook as they plan headcount increases and continued AI rollout -- PwC

Almost 60% of CEOs around the world expect global economic growth to increase over the next 12 months, according to 普华永道 ’s 28th Annual Global CEO Survey, launched during the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting.

The report, which surveyed 4,701 CEOs across 109 countries and territories, also finds that 42% expect to increase headcount by 5% or more in the next 12 months – more than double the proportion who expect headcount decreases (17%), and up from 39% last year.

Mohamed Kande, Global Chairman, PwC

The percentage is highest (48%) among smaller companies (less than US$100 million) and those in the technology (61%), real estate (61%), private equity (52%) and pharma and life sciences (51%) sectors.

While CEOs are optimistic about the global economy, macroeconomic volatility (29%) and inflation (27%) nevertheless remain the top risks for the year ahead cited by CEOs globally, but with clear differences between regions.

“This year’s CEO Survey findings highlight a stark juxtaposition – business leaders around the world are optimistic about the year ahead, but also know they must re-invent how they create, deliver and capture value," Mohamed Kande , Global Chairman, PwC.

"Emerging technologies such as GenAI, shifts in geopolitics, and the climate transition are all revolutionizing how the economy works. New business ecosystems are forming, transforming how companies compete and create value. To thrive, business leaders must act now and take bold decisions around their strategy – ranging from people, footprint and supply chain, right through to reinventing their business model.,” he added.

Gartner Predicts Mobile App Usage Will Decrease 25% due to AI Assistants by 2027

By 2027 mobile app usage will decrease by 25% due to AI assistants according to Gartner . Smartphone users will turn to AI assistants, such as Apple Intelligence, ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Meta AI, and others to replace apps for many functions. In addition to the impact of AI assistants, apps will be consolidated across separate brands and companies, creating mobile app partnerships or consortiums to reach more users per app at scale and defray the cost of creation and maintenance.

Emily Weiss, Senior Principal for the Gartner Marketing Practice.

“CMOs should begin scenario planning for the impacts of decreased mobile app usage," said Emily Weiss Senior Principal for the Gartner Marketing Practice. “Brands with low app engagement and retention will likely be first impacted – this will be a positive development for brands that are not overly reliant on driving revenue via apps as app development costs will decrease. Other brands may be severely impacted by the disintermediation of users turning to AI assistants for services. The loss of app users will also result in the loss of first-party data collection and the ability to reach fewer users via mobile push notifications.”
