Sandia, Cerebras, LANL, LLNL Team are Gordon Bell Finalists
I am proud to announce work of a team from Sandia National Laboratories Cerebras Systems Los Alamos National Laboratory Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory has been selected as the ACM, Association for Computing Machinery Gordon Bell Prize finalists! We will present the results at SC Conference Series 2024 meeting in Atlanta!
The dream team: Michael James, James Laros, Kylee Santos, Stan Moore, Ilya Sharapov, Delyan Kalchev, Aidan Thompson, Tomas Oppelstrup, Danny Perez, Scott Pakin, Edgar A Leon, Rob Schreiber, Amirali Sharifian.
Short blurb: Our community has been focused on weak scaling Molecular Dynamics simulations for a very long time due to the "hardware lottery" of building systems with CPUs/GPUs. While solving ever larger systems is interesting, we have not built systems that can solve systems for longer timescale faster. A simulation to understand slow microstructure transformation processes would take more than an year on Frontier. What can we achieve with a radically different hardware such as Cerebras WSE? This work presents the answer: We can solve the problem in less than a day. See the article for more details.
Summary of the result: This work makes a two orders of magnitude jump in achieved timesteps/s with the Cerebras wafer. Record MD simulation 699k timesteps/s using many-body EAM potential. 457-fold improvement in time to solution versus Frontier! Simulation of 300 microseconds/day at 5 fs timestep.
