The Sanctuary of Truth

The Sanctuary of Truth

We had the opportunity to visit the sanctuary of truth, Pattaya - Thailand recently and were amazed by its beauty and teaching. A great historical and spiritual experience for my wife and me.

I thought of writing a little about the philosophy behind the creation and art of the Sanctuary of truth and also some learnings for us.

Who are we? Where are we from? How do we survive? What is our life purpose?? These are the questions that have been frequently asked since the beginning of time, however the answers vary from person to person, depending on our background.

At the sanctuary of Truth Museum, our answers are exhibited through the wooden sculptures around, waiting for one to explore the Seven Truths.

The First Truth speaks about the fact that we are all composed of four classic elements: Earth, Water, Wind & Fire.

The Second Truth, speaks about how we survive from birth to death, and how our life depends on nature.

The Third and Fourth Truth speaks about how we brought nothing to the world, so we cannot take anything out of it, however, our good or bad actions remain. Understanding this truth helps us reduce our endless desire and recognise human equality - the very basis of non- discriminatory behaviour.

The Fifth Truth refers to creation of the principles of 'Self Development' that guide our life purpose especially on our future self. It advises us to associate ourselves only with good people, being respectful to those who deserve it, surround ourselves with positive people, be self sufficient with everything that comes in life, be a life long learner, use knowledge and skills to achieve all that we want to, being careful with our words, taking care of our family - parents, partners and children, never giving up something that we really want, give a hand to those who need it, achieve success with honour, avoid places that are in bad taste and harmful to us, never postpone things for tomorrow, be polite to everyone and give back to those who support us.

It is said that following the above lessons can bring us happiness.

As human beings we are not meant to be alone. Being social beings we need to learn appropriate ways of behaving with people in society as per the Sixth Truth. This appropriate behaviour will help create a society filled with generosity, politeness, humility, respect, understanding, an acceptance of differences in society, justice, forgiveness, gratitude and harmony. All this in turn will lead to happiness, love, kindness and balance within nature.

The Seventh Truth states that all of this will happen if only we start with ourselves and family, then this will spread to society and to the world at large finally leading to world peace.

The Sanctuary of Truth eventually wants to pass on the message that all humans are only dust in the universe and will ultimately become one with it. Though materialistic pleasures are good but they all land up being superficial and that true joy and happiness is found in intrinsic spiritual pleasure.

Maybe a time to ask myself a question:

Where am I in my inner journey?

What actions am I taking that are being guided by my inner journey?
