San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity Kicks Off Year-End Giving to Support Expanding the American Dream Campaign with Giving Tuesday
San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity
Our vision: A San Gabriel Valley and a world where everyone has a decent place to live.
With the help of donors and supporters,?San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity (SGV Habitat for Humanity) committed to transforming the lives of 100 families in the San Gabriel Valley, the Philippines, and Haiti?over three years?during their?Expanding the American Dream?campaign. With only one year left, the organization needs your help to reach this goal.
The Expanding the American Dream campaign is a?$28 million?investment?in the community, driven by the commitment to help more families achieve financial security and stability. Since officially launching the campaign on January 4, 2021 SGV Habitat for Humanity has provided homeownership opportunities to 10 local families, assisted 44 low-income families with critical home repairs (so they can keep and maintain a home they own) and made it possible for 25 homes to be built internationally.
Expanding the American Dream made it possible for Salihah and her family to stay in the home they own after Salihah had a stroke leaving her wheelchair bound.?After her stroke, Salihah was limited to living in the living room and bedroom. She was going to the gym daily to bathe. Through our critical home repair program several doorways inside the house were widened to fit her wheelchair, a ramp going into the house was built and the bathroom was updated for accessibility.
“It has changed her life, says Zuheerah, Salihah’s mother.
Affordable home repairs like these have helped seniors age in place, have helped families pass down generational wealth through homeownership and have eased the burden for many low-income households wondering how to restore their living conditions to safe and decent standards. SGV Habitat’s home repair program compliments the organizations first-time low-income homebuyer program, which helps serve those who cannot afford to purchase a market-rate home.
“The last few years have given home a new meaning to so many,” said Bryan Wong, Executive Director at SGV Habitat for Humanity. “The country is in the biggest housing crisis we have ever seen. Our goal is to dramatically increase the number of affordable homeownership opportunities in the San Gabriel Valley and become the answer to the housing crisis locally.”
Two generous members of SGV Habitat’s Builders’ Club (a group of monthly supporters) also see the potential of the organization to serve more families in the coming year. They have offered $10,000 in matching funds for Giving Tuesday (the largest one day giving event of the year) donations.
“The Builders’ Club is a testament to the contribution SGV Habitat is making to affordable homeownership in LA County,” said Shannon Castro, Resource Development Director at SGV Habitat. “Each of these individuals believe strongly in our mission and the great work we do to help families.”
As we head into the busiest giving season of the year, SGV Habitat aims to raise $75,000 this Giving Tuesday to help support a long list of upcoming projects. The nonprofit will wrap up construction on two new homes in Pasadena within a few weeks and has plans to break ground on projects in Altadena, Azusa and Baldwin Park within the next year. In addition, at least 50 critical home repairs are planned throughout the San Gabriel Valley. This work can only take place with the support of the community.
Individual donors, corporate donors, churches, schools, foundations and organizations are invited to participate in the Expanding the American Dream Campaign, the largest fundraising campaign in SGV Habitat history, by visiting sgvhabitat.org/ead for more information and to donate.
