San Antonio: A Powerhouse for Cyber & STEM Talent

San Antonio: A Powerhouse for Cyber & STEM Talent

When people think of San Antonio, they picture the River Walk or Fiesta Texas—for good reason. But beyond the tourism, our city (the 7th largest in the U.S.) is a STEM and cybersecurity powerhouse shaping the future of tech talent.

Today marked the 15th annual San Antonio Mayor’s Cyber Cup, a celebration of the extraordinary students, coaches, and mentors competing in CyberPatriot—the world’s largest National Youth Cyber Education Program, run by the Air and Space Forces Association (AFA).

Out of 5,050 teams competing nationwide this year, San Antonio led the country with 650+ teams—more than any other U.S. city! Only 25 teams will make it to the AFA CyberPatriot Private CyberPatriot national finals in Maryland, and two teams from San Antonio are among them.

These accomplishments don’t happen in isolation. It takes an entire infosphere of leaders, educators, sponsors, and volunteers to prepare the next generation for careers in cybersecurity. At the heart of this effort is the Texas Cyber Foundation, led by Joe S. and his dedicated team. Their mission: to equip the next generation with the skills to thrive in an evolving cyber landscape.

The Mayor’s Cyber Cup isn’t just about competition—it’s about opportunity. Winning teams are recognized by industry and military leaders, and awarded scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $60,000, sponsored by the: ARMED FORCES COMMUNICATION AND ELECTRONICS ASSOCIATION (AFCEA) Educational Foundation, Hallmark University , and St. Mary's University .

Leading companies—including CrowdStrike, Leidos, and Booz Allen Hamilton—play a crucial role in supporting this initiative, ensuring students have the mentorship and resources to succeed.

Why San Antonio? Because we invest in and build our future. We collaborate to build world-class STEM and cybersecurity talent. We recognize that education, industry, and government must work together to make our city a top destination for tech, business, and families.

If you haven’t experienced San Antonio beyond the tourist attractions, come see what we’re building. The next generation of cyber talent is already here. Congratulations to all the teams on your hard work and dedication!

Todays celebrations were inspiring - These students have accomplished a lot early in their life, what is truly exciting is the impact they will all have as they head to college, the military and the workforce. San Antonio has established itself as a remarkably impactful place on the global cyber community.
