Samsung's tezhou wafer factory may lose hundreds of billions of won in revenue until mid April

Affected by the recent cold wave and snow disaster in the United States, Samsung Electronics' wafer factory in Austin, Texas, had to be temporarily closed due to power shortage.

According to the latest report from business Korea, Samsung's wafer factory in Austin, Texas, remained closed after a power outage on the afternoon of February 16. Industry analysts predict the shutdown could last about two months until mid April.

According to the report, although the power supply of the wafer factory was restored within three days, the restart time was delayed due to water shortage. South Korean engineers flew to the United States last week to find ways to minimize losses, but they were also at a loss.

Sales at the Austin plant in 2020 will be about 3.9 trillion won (3.47 billion US dollars). Assuming that it will generate a similar level of sales in 2021, simple calculations show that if it stops operating for one day, it will lose 10 billion won (US $8.91 million) in sales.

According to this calculation, it is estimated that more than 100 billion won (89.1 million US dollars) of sales losses have been generated due to the recent shutdown. If the closure continues until mid April, sales losses could reach hundreds of billions of won.

Considering that it takes a lot of time to raise production (production efficiency) to normal level, even if the production line is restarted, the loss of sales may increase further.
