For many, October can feel a long month. Summer is over, the nights draw in and suddenly the bills go up as the heating kicks in. It can easily feel a bit gloomy.

So this month we’re bringing you a deep dive on how to make your life easier and more enjoyable with the help of intelligent technology. Whether it’s managing your bills, recommendations on what to watch on TV or even learning the rules of American Football – we're here to help you out.

And we’re also celebrating our ranking as a Top 5 Global Brand, thanks to our innovative AI technology. Check out the latest developments below. But first, we want to tell you about some critical research we are involved in.

Heart disease and depression: researchers are using Samsung tech to track these conditions

Vital research is being carried out by major medical institutions such as Massachusetts General Hospital and Tulane University School of Medicine to search for early markers for these conditions, in turn helping to save lives. Both are collaborating with Samsung to harness the data from our Galaxy Watches and Samsung Health SDK (our software platform that shares data with partners) to test if wearables can detect early signs of heart disease and depression. AI-enabled TVs to predict what you want to watch and adjust the volume automatically

Imagine a TV that predicts what you want to watch before you do. The vast majority of us want to hand over everyday tasks like this to AI, which includes spending less time searching for shows and more time watching them. ?This was a hot topic of conversation at Samsung’s annual Developer Conference in California where we unveiled a series of exciting new AI-powered innovations that will save you time and effort.

AI features are now available on even more Samsung devices thanks to Tizen, Samsung’s major operating system. For Samsung TVs, this means a personalised experience with AI powered recommendations on what to watch. And with a simple voice command Bixby, Samsung’s AI assistant, can now help you easily find content on your TV, control your smart home and even open appliance doors. Stay warm and save money on your energy bills this winter

It's fair to say nobody was thrilled when it was announced at the start of the month that energy bills were going up. Here’s how we can help you.

Samsung’s partnership with British Gas means you can better manage your energy usage. As part of the PeakSave program, you can automate your appliances using SmartThings Energy and earn rewards for using electricity during off-peak hours. So far, British Gas has paid over £13 million to 650,000 customers taking part in the scheme.

Also, Hive’s thermostats are now integrated into SmartThings App and if you have one, you can save up to £172 per year[1]. Using the app you can now have better control over your home’s temperatures, whether it’s setting new temperature targets or changing them when you’re out and about.

And for when you’re on the move, the SmartThings app integrates Tesla technology to give you more control over the optimal times to charge your car so you are making the most of off-peak times on the grid, therefore saving money.

These new features come as Samsung celebrates 10 years of SmartThings making energy management a more seamless, connected experience. And with all these new features, managing your home energy (and saving money!) has never been easier.

What else have we been up to?

Northern Ireland named as the UK’s future ‘Silicon Valley’

77% of young people in Northern Ireland would like to work in technology. This was unveiled in new research conducted by Samsung for the launch of its 5th annual Solve for Tomorrow competition, a programme which aims to support young innovators across the UK.

The findings show a strong desire to use tech for good amongst young people, with many confident they could invent or develop a technology product that would positively impact society. Likewise many believe a career in technology would allow them to positively contribute to society, despite 65% feeling that their background will affect how they progress in the industry. A panel discussion on these findings and the future of innovation was held at Samsung KX to inspire future change-makers, featuring musician, broadcaster and entrepreneur Krept, and current Solve For Tomorrow winner, SFT winner Anjali Benny Devadasan.

If you’re aged between 16-25, applications to the competition are now open on our Solve For Tomorrow website.

I think we'll take far longer than we can imagine to get TVs to actually perceive how we feel about the day we've been having, because if nothing else, that's what makes us feel like picking a certain thing to watch over anything else.
