Same shit different day

Same shit different day

That's kinda of how I feel when sharing about ransomware events. The story always takes the same path. Daily.

XYZ has experienced what it believes is a potential data breach.

Mr Clueless CEO reports that his IT department detected some "unusual activity" on their network and they closed it down as a precaution.

Even more clueless another individual (name changed to protect the innocent) states that "we do not believe any data was stolen".

Yes, it's the same shit yet another day.

The definition of insanity

Well, this is a well-trodden saying yet we still keep doing it don't we?

Does your business run by numbers?

I sure hope so! I guess that you are not just hoping for good results in your business lives, that targets are set and metrics reviewed daily/weekly.

If that is true then let's take a look at some numbers you should act on today.

  1. No. #1 - yes the United States is the most targeted Country of any when it comes to ransomware attacks.
  2. The average ransomware paid in 2023 was $1.54 million. Double that of 2022.
  3. Ransomware attacks have risen by over 13% year on year.
  4. The average downtime created from a ransomware attack is 22 days.
  5. World record payout from a ransomware attack? $40 million.
  6. The highest demand from a ransomware gang is around $70 million.
  7. Half a billion ransomware attacks in 2022 alone.
  8. Only 29% of all ransomware victims were able to unencrypt their data after either paying or getting their data back.

Run those numbers in your business the next time your IT company wants you to invest in cyber security measures.

Securely yours,

Scott
