SAME HANDLE

SAME HANDLE

Now, I have to be careful here as, for once, I haven't been able to practice what I preach... kind of. (It's important to be honest about it)

Your "handle" on social media is your username and I advise clients to, where possible, secure the same handle across multiple platforms.

It helps for two reasons:

  • It makes is easier for you to promote where you post
  • It makes it easier for people to remember and find you

For example:

And if you want extra bonus points you can have a domain name that matches so people can find your website too ;-)

This is The Simplified URL Effect where you promote an easier to remember domain name that points to your existing site - in this case www.jamesnewell.co.uk.

Having the same "handle" is a really cool thing to do if you can secure them all, but with so many platforms, users and potential character limitations it might not be as easy as we'd like it to be...

In that case it can be advantageous to have a memorable or explanatory handle if you can secure it as an alternative.

TikTok is the prime example here, I secured the username @sellingtips a long time ago as it's such a good one.

So there you have it. It's best to have the same "handle" on all platforms where you can, but whatever you do, make sure your "handle" is easy to read, write, speak and spell because if someone can't remember it, or if they flinch before typing it... then it's an issue.

This and other naming techniques and structures are explored in my upcoming book - How To Name Something.
