The same. But different.

The same. But different.

Things that are unconsciously assumed to be only semantically different. Part 1.

Spoiler alert: Change Leadership & Change Management are not the same.

Start with a gap.

Between a team's performance & where it should be?

Between the future you are trying to create and the reality you are living?

Between your company's strategic goal and where it today?

You need your Change Leadership Hat. It's that hat's job to decide what needs to be changed, what to and how to CLOSE THE GAP. The hat's output is a plan to close the gap.

Change hats.

Your Change Manager's Hat is to implement the plan. But unexpected stuff will happen. There'll be a gap between what should be happening and what is. You'll need to decide what needs to be changed, what to, and how to close the gap.

You'll continuously adapt and flex and horse-trade until the plan is implemented and the Big Gap closed.

Only, and this is important. Something might happen that means if you carry on cycling round the change management loop then Bad Things are going to happen. Bad Things you can't control. Or maybe you just Get Stuck and can't move forwards unless something OUTSIDE THE PLAN gets changed, shifted, moved, negotiated.

Change hats.

The same but different.

Part 2 tomorrow.
