Podcast: IoT Security International Regulation & Trends

According to upcoming regulation announced by Anatel - Agência Nacional de Telecomunica??es , Brazil based manufacturers and vendors of CPEs will be required to provide security updates and maintain notification channels for discovered home network vulnerabilities ?? https://lnkd.in/dZX-z_uY

This important initiative is part of a worldwide growing trend aimed to secure national communications against current and future threats, that also target ISPs’ networks and compromise critical infrastructure communication devices (for example, routers).

But what about the end customers? ??

Tune in to the following SAMiBits episode as Katherine Hennessey Gronberg , NightDragon 's Head of Government Services, shares her perspective on homeowners, IoT devices, and what all this means for them and the ISPs that serve them.

News: Printers Pose Persistent Yet Overlooked Threat!

Printers are the sort of IoT devices people don't want to touch once they get them working. But, according to Dark Reading , most modern printers lack the security measures needed to prevent attackers from planting backdoors and infiltrating your customers’ entire networks, putting their digital safety at risk. ?? In their review, Quocirca reports that half of CISOs had difficulty keeping up with printer-security demands, while 7 in 10 companies are planning to increase spending on IoT security this year. ?

But what about SOHO business owners who use their printer daily? They don't have a CISO or relevant knowledge and time to deal with all of that! Just one attack could mean the end of their business… and what they don’t always know is that firewalls are inadequate for network protection when it comes to IoT devices.??

But here's where you come in – by providing cybersecurity protection at the CPE-level, you can give your customers peace of mind to handle their business as you become their automated CISO. After all, investing in cybersecurity is just as important as investing in a good old-fashioned lock on your front door. ?? ???

News: 43% of US MDU Residents Report Using Smart Home Devices

According to a Parks Associates study, 43% of US MDU residents report using smart home devices, which are increasingly being offered by their property managers. These residents also express a preference for monitoring and controlling their devices through a single user interface.?

And this is true for your SFU customers as well, as the typical US home connects to an average of 20 unmanaged IoT devices. ?? ???

The MDU/SFU distinction is crucial for ISPs in determining the right connectivity offering. Another important distinction that could be overlooked lies between residential and small-office-home-office (SOHO) customers and their expectations regarding network protection from their ISP.

Micro-businesses that use residential routers must have a robust network security layer in place to address IoT vulnerabilities! By installing protection on top of their existing gateway, these businesses, which are currently using high-rate consumer packages, can avoid the need for a more expensive and complex firewall solution while still enjoying the desired level of protection and control.

Case Study: A Family-Run Florist in an Upbeat Neighborhood!

To better understand what an unmanaged security network looks like, let’s take a look at a real-life example: A mother and daughter run a thriving flower shop that processes numerous transactions daily, and constantly strive to improve their tech and security operations. The daughter loves gadgets and often connects new IoT devices to the shop’s Wi-Fi network.

Without an IT person, this business’ network would remain open to exploitable vulnerabilities. Just imagine a phishing attack stealing their credentials, accessing their billing system, or an attack on the AC system, damaging their flower stock. ??

Both small business and home owners are not tech experts. Their unmanaged network puts them at risk! Let's collaborate in empowering your customers with knowledge about CPE-based protection for their digital well-being. ??
