Sam McNally - Reflecting on the Marketing Fellowship
Bord Bia - The Irish Food Board
Growing the success of Irish food, drink and horticulture.
Recent graduate of the Bord Bia Talent Academy Marketing Fellowship Sam M. reflects on his time in the programme, and his placement in Singapore, helping Irish companies to expand in a new and exciting market.
"Joining the Bord Bia Marketing Fellowship Programme has been one of the most transformative experiences of my career. Prior to this, I worked as a consultant across various industries for almost five years. Although I gained extensive experience, I wanted to specialise in one industry. The fellowship offered a fantastic opportunity to gain industry-specific experience in a sector I had never worked in before and had not previously considered. My academic background in politics and information systems made this a significant departure for me.
"The fellowship has provided me with unparalleled opportunities. I have participated in a trade mission to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and Manila, Philippines, accompanied by the Minister for Agriculture and an Irish government delegation. Additionally, I have attended trade shows in these countries, as well as in Singapore and Thailand.
"One of the most enjoyable aspects of the programme has been experiencing a completely new culture. While English is widely spoken in Singapore, there are still many differences. Even seemingly mundane days can lead to encounters with interesting cuisine, people, or celebrations, such as a lion dance on the street.
"The biggest learning for me has been understanding the significant reach of the Irish food industry. Until you’re involved, you don’t realise the extent to which Irish produce is being consumed on dinner plates on the other side of the world. Given the distances involved, it’s often only the best of the best of Irish food that makes it here, and it’s recognised and served in some of the most exclusive restaurants in the region.

"For those considering applying to the Bord Bia Marketing Fellowship Programme, I cannot recommend it highly enough. It offers unparalleled opportunities to learn and travel, coupled with an excellent educational experience. It is a fantastic opportunity to catapult your career in the industry.
"Of course, the journey has not been without its challenges. Transitioning from an office based and corporate environment to the hands-on nature of the food industry was a significant adjustment. Developing relationships with buyers, distributors, chefs, and business owners was a new experience for me. However, this challenge was easily overcome thanks to the strong support network in place for fellows.
"The Bord Bia Marketing Fellowship Programme has been an adventure, filled with learning, growth, and memorable experiences. It has equipped me with the skills and confidence to navigate the global food industry and opened doors to exciting opportunities. If you are passionate about the Irish food and beverage sector and eager to expand your horizons, this programme is the perfect platform to launch your career."
